PC220LC-8 Error Code E989M00

The document is an email from Skip Kincaid providing a warning about using a training monitor connected via extension cable for PC8 training. He details an experience where changing the password on the training monitor and not resetting it to the factory default caused error code E989M00 "Engine lock caution2" on the actual machine's monitor, preventing the engine from starting. The key points are that every PC8 has a default password of 000 000 stored in both the monitor and engine controller, and if the passwords do not match between the two, this error occurs. To resolve the issue, the mounted monitor just needs 10 minutes at key-on with the access code entered to change the password back to the default.

Subject PC220LC-8 error code E989M00 "Engine lock caution2"

Gentlemen,

As the time approaches that you will all have opportunity to conduct PC8
training locally, please use caution when you employ the Monitor Trainer's
Kit (Outside training monitor connected via extension cable). Using a
'training' monitor does permit many simulations and is therefore a most
excellent means of hands-on learning..... especially complex tasks, such as
password enabling & Changing. My own experience has taught me the subject
ERROR CODE because I taught my class how to enable, then change passwords,
then disable same..... but notice - we never returned password to original
of (000 000) which is the FACTORY DEFAULT. Upon re-connecting the machine's
mounted monitor, engine would not start, but showed NO PASSWORD SCREEN at
key-on and it would CRANK - just no fuel! Checking abnormality codes
revealed the above. SM section on this code says (see below):

IMPORTANT POINTS:

1. Every PC8 is shipped with a PASSWORD in memory (000 000) but disabled,
so you won't 'see' it.
2. PASSWORD memory is now in the monitor AND the tier3 HP CR Engine's
controller (ECM).
3. If these 2 PASSWORD memories don't agree - you get subject code and
engine won't start. (My class had changed 000 000 to '1111')
4. 10 minute PASSWORD access waiting time NO LONGER requires engine to be
running - just 'key-on'.
5. Since PC8 now "ALWAYS" has a password in both monitor & ECM memory - if
PASSWORD is LOST, both monitor AND engine ECM need replaced!

My situation, in Cartersville, was resolved by revisiting the mounted

monitor + Key-on for 10 minutes + password ACCESS CODE (4+729729)... SELECT
"CHANGE PASSWORD" and entered (000 000) without enabling password. Engine
immediately started.
