BJT - Lab Experiment

The document describes an experiment using a differential amplifier circuit to demonstrate its three operating modes: single-ended mode which amplifies the difference between one input signal and ground, double-ended mode which amplifies the difference between two input signals, and common mode where no difference is amplified since both inputs have the same signal; the experiment involves constructing the circuit in LTspice, applying various input voltages to achieve the different modes, recording the resulting output waveforms and voltages, and analyzing the voltage gain for each mode.

INTRODUCTION:

Various electronics circuits can perform mathematical operations. One of which is a differential
amplifier. A differential amplifier is an amplifier that used two common-emitter (CE) configurations with a
common emitter resistor, RE. It has two inputs and two separate outputs. Each transistor has an individual gain.
Overall, it is a high gain amplifier capable of amplifying the difference between the two input signals, thus, the
name of the circuit – differential amplifier.

It has three modes of operation, namely, single-ended mode, double-ended mode, and common-mode.
Below is the summary of the operating modes.

Mode of What is
Description Input 1 Input 2
Operation amplified?
One input has a
Vin1 0 Vin1 – 0
Single-ended signal while the
mode other input is
0 Vin2 0 – Vin2
grounded.
Different signal is
Double-ended applied to each
Vin1 Vin2 Vin1 – Vin2
mode/ base.
(Vin1 ≠ Vin2)
The same signal is
applied to both
Common mode bases. Vin Vin Vin1 – Vin2 = 0
(Vin1 = Vin2 =
Vin)
PROCEDURE:

1. Construct the given circuit below in LTspice. Use 1-kHz sine waves for V1 and V2. Determine the
necessary SPICE directive.

2. Demonstrate each mode of operation. Provide the appropriate VIN1 and VIN2 values (in mV) to
achieve the expected undistorted output waveforms based on the table of summary above. Please
use white background for the waveform background.
3. Record the data and results in the table below. Expand the table to be able to present the data
clearly.

*Two conditions will be demonstrated for single-ended mode: (1) V1 has an arbitrary peak-to-peak voltage
value while V2 is grounded and (2) V1 is grounded while V2 has an arbitrary peak-to-peak voltage value.
**Replace with the corresponding waveform.

ANSWER THE FF:
1. Analyze Vout1 and Vout2 for each mode of operation with respect to Vin1 and Vin2.

2. Compute for the voltage gain for each mode of operation.
