Where: P = 10*(Sum of the figures of ETEA Roll No.) Q2 a) Classify vectors representing physical quantities, with the help of diagrams. EXAMPLES OF SCALARS: Scalars include height, mass, area, and volume. EXAMPLES OF VECTORS: Examples of vectors include displacement, velocity, and acceleration. b) Determine the weight in newtons of a woman whose weight in pounds is 125. Also, find her mass in slugs and in kilograms. Determine your own weight in newtons. Q3 a) From the gravitational law calculate the weight W (gravitational force with respect to the earth) of an 80-kg man in a spacecraft traveling in a circular orbit 250 km above the earth’s surface. Determine W in both newtons and pounds. b) Discuss Newton’s laws of motion with relevant examples. Newton: 1st Law of motion - every object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change its state by the action of an external force. Newton's first law states that, if a body is at rest or moving at a constant speed in a straight line, it will remain at rest or keep moving in a straight line at constant speed unless it is acted upon by a force. This postulate is known as the law of inertia. Examples: If you slide a hockey puck on ice, eventually it will stop, because of friction on the ice. It will also stop if it hits something, like a player's stick or a goalpost. 2nd Law of motion - the acceleration of an object is directly related to the net force and inversely related to its mass. Acceleration of an object depends on two things, force and mass. Examples: Newton's Second Law of Motion says that acceleration (gaining speed) happens when a force acts on a mass (object). Riding your bicycle is a good example of this law of motion at work. Your bicycle is the mass. Your leg muscles pushing pushing on the pedals of your bicycle is the force. 3rd Law of motion - for every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction. Examples: Motion are ubiquitous in everyday life. For example, when you jump, your legs apply a force to the ground, and the ground applies and equal and opposite reaction force that propels you into the air. Q4 a) Suppose that two non-dimensional quantities are exactly A =8.67 and B = 1.429. Using the rules for significant figures, express the four quantities (A+B), (A-B), (AB), and (A/B). b) The 450-kg uniform I-beam supports the load shown. Draw the free body diagram. Determine the reactions at the supports.
