Assignment #1: Plastic Beam Bending Dec. 2020

This document provides an assignment for an advanced solid mechanics course. It includes two problems analyzing plastic beam bending using the Ramberg-Osgood stress-strain relationship. The first problem involves plotting the stress-strain and force-displacement curves for a beam, and the second analyzes the elasto-plastic loading of an aluminum channel under three-point bending, calculating strain, unloading/reloading the beam, and comparing deflection curves to experimental results.

Assignment #1: Plastic beam bending Dec. 2020

1.- Solve example presented in class considering the Ramberg-Osgood stress-strain relationship.
Take an exponent m=27. Prepare plots of the stress-strain and force-displacement of the process, and
compare these results with those obtained in class following the elastic-perfectly plastic model.

2.- Analyze the elasto-plastic loading/unloading of a simply supported aluminum channel under
three-point flexural test, following the procedure explained in class. The material is aluminum alloy
6063, and the dimensions of the section are (external): B: 6 cm x H: 2.5 cm, and t: 2 mm. Employ
the Ramberg-Osgood model for the material with an exponent m=23.

i. Calculate and plot vs P the strain on the top and bottom of the section for different
values beyond the yield point, and proceed to unload elastically. Reload to a higher
value of P.

ii. For the maximum value of P, integrate two times distribution of curvature along the
beam to obtain the deflection curve. Compare it with the elastic deflection curve.

iii. Compare and comment your results with those available from the three-point bending
test developed at SiMar lab.
