Power Swing Blocking: Brief Description

The document discusses power swing blocking in the REL670 line distance protection relay. It provides a brief description, then details how the relay consists of measuring inner and outer impedance characteristics to recognize power swings and block distance zones for a period of time.

Power Swing Blocking

Brief Description

Power Swing Blocking (ABB REL670)

∆Fw: distance between RLdOutFw and RLdInFw

RLdInRv: kLdRRv·RLdOutRv
kLdRRv : settable multiplication factor less than 1
∆Rv: distance between RLdOutRv and RLdInRv
R1FInRv: inner resistive characteristic in the second quadrant outside the load encr.

• Consists of measuring its inner and outer impedance characteristics.

• If an impedance transit duration between the outer and inner zone is
longer than time tP1 selected distance zones are blocked
• Swings are recognized as consecutive if the measured impedance leaves
the outer zone and returns back for a period of time shorter than tW
RLdInFw = kLdRFw·RLdOutFw
• In such a case, time element tP2 is used instead of tP1 because later
kLdRFw: settable multiplication factor less than 1 swings are generally faster.
LdAngle: slope of the load encroachment for inner and outer boundary • Blocking remains activated until measured impedance leaves outer zone.
Activation could be extended with tH setting
X1InFw: reactive reach inner boundary
R1LIn: line resistance for the inner boundary. • Power swing detection is disabled if measured impedance remains in
characteristics area longer than tR2 setting
R1FInFw: fault resistance coverage for the inner boundary
• Swing blocking can be disabled if there is SLG fault during swing.
