Area of Polygons and Circles

The document discusses key formulas for calculating areas and angles of polygons and circles. It introduces formulas for calculating the sum of interior and exterior angles of polygons based on the number of sides. Regular polygons have equal interior angles. Formulas are provided for calculating the areas of triangles, regular polygons, and similar polygons based on side lengths. The circumference and arc length of circles are defined in terms of diameter and radius. Formulas are given for calculating the circumference, arc length, and areas of circles and circular sectors.

Angle  Measures  in  Polygons
You have already learned that the name of a polygon depends on the
number of sides in the polygon. The sum of the measures of the
interior angles of a polygon also depends on the number of sides.

Polygon Interior Angles Theorem: The sum of the measures of the

interior angles of a convex n – gon is (n – 2) • 180

Corollary to the Polygon Interior Angles Theorem: The measure

of each interior angle of a regular n-gon is (n − 2 ) • 180°

n
Polygon Exterior Angles Theorem: The sum of the measures of the
exterior angles of a convex polygon (one angle at each vertex) is 360°

Corollary to the Polygon Exterior Angles Theorem: The measure of

each exterior angle of a regular n-gon is 360°

Areas  of  Regular  Polygons
The area of any triangle with base length b, and height h, is given by A=1/2bh.
The following formula for equilateral triangles, uses only the side length.

Area of an Equilateral Triangle

The area of an equilateral triangle is one fourth the square of length of the
side times 3

Area of a Regular Polygon Theorem: The area of a regular polygon

with side length s, is half the product of the distance from the center to
any side a, and the perimeter P, so 1 1
A = aP ,  or  A = a ⋅ ns

Perimeters  and  Areas  of  Similar
Figures
For any polygon, the perimeter of the polygon is the sum of the lengths of its
sides and the area of the polygon is the number of square units contained in
its interior.

Areas of Similar Polygons Theorem: If two polygons are similar with the
lengths of corresponding sides in the ratio of a:b, then the ratio of their areas
is a2:b2.

Circumference  and  Arc  Length
The circumference of a circle is the distance around the circle. For all circles,
the ratio of the circumference to the diameter is the same. This ratio is known
as π or pi.

Circumference of a Circle: The circumference C of a circle is C=πd or

C = 2πr, where d is the diameter of the circle and r is the radius of the circle.

An arc length is a portion of the circumference of a circle. You can use the
measure of the arc (in degrees) to find its length (in linear units).

Arc Length Corollary: In a circle, the ratio of the length of a given arc to the
circumference is equal to the ratio of the measure of the arc to 360°.

Area of a Circle: The area of a circle is π times the square of the

radius, or A = πr2.

A sector of a circle is the region bounded by two radii of the circle and
their intercepted arc. In the diagram, sector APB is bounded by AP, BP,
and AB.
