Preparing for your interview

Know yourself
 Consider your strengths and weaknesses
 Identify accomplishments you are proud of. Why are you proud of them? How did you
evaluate these accomplishments?

 Have you developed any new skills that will help support your application? If so, how did you
develop these?

 Be able to articulate why you are interested in this field of study. What led to an interest in
this area? What are your long-term goals?

Know the course


 Research your chosen area of study thoroughly
 Ensure that you are aware of any new developments in your field

 You may be asked to express your views on current affairs, so make sure that you know
what's happening in the news

 Read through your personal statement and any other correspondence that you have sent to
the university

 Research the University (especially course content and key staff)

General tips
 What time is your interview? How long will you have?
 Check the location of the building - is there parking or good transport connections?

 Decide what to wear in advance.

First impressions count!


 Do not be late – if exceptional circumstances occur, contact Admissions urgently to confirm if
there is still time for you to complete your interview
 Walk into a room confidently, making eye contact
 Firm handshake

 Smile

 Introduce yourself, if given the opportunity

 What are the interviewers looking for?


 Your ability to communicate (articulate, clear thinking).
 Your commitment to university, the course and subject (highly motivated, clear
commitment, passion for the subject).

 Preparation and readiness to study (awareness of study commitment and organisational


ability).

 Assessment of suitability for the course (strong potential to succeed).

Body language

 Use eye contact


 Be aware of your posture and don't fidget

 Be positive

 Nod to show that you are listening

 In a group situation, make sure you contribute but always give others a chance to have their
say too

 Try to be yourself

Answering questions

 Speak clearly
 Listen to the question being asked and ensure that you answer it

 Do not just answer yes or no - expand on your answer

 Show what you know – try and incorporate information about the university and the course
into your answers

 If you get flustered, take a breath and start again


 Try to consider why you are being asked a certain question

 Most of all, good luck!
