Grammar: Correlative conjunctions

(neither..nor, either…or, both…and)

Examples:

 either/or - I want either the cheesecake or the chocolate cake.


- I saved some money to buy either new dress or new coat.
- Either apologize or leave!
- She seems very happy. She either got her driving licence or passed her exam.

We use: “either..or” to express choice.

 neither/nor - Oh, you want neither the cheesecake nor the chocolate cake? No


problem.
- Neither I nor my sister were happy in the party.
- We had neither umbrellas nor raincoats yesterday.
- Neither Italy nor Spain got to the quarter finals.

We use “neither…nor” to express negation.

 both/and - We’ll have both the cheesecake and the chocolate cake.


- Both Sara and Houda prefer comedy movies.
- Both the father and his son were aware when crossing the road.
- Mr.Bob was both funny and modest about his adventures.

We use “both…and” to express inclusion.
