ANALOGIES
When we want a concept to sink in, we will often form a link
between something they are familiar with and something that is new to
them. This is called an analogy. Analogies are built by establishing a
relationship between two words, then using that as an example to
demonstrate the same relationship between another pair of words.
In this module, you will learn how to use an analogy to improves
your vocabulary skills and develop critical thinking skills by making
connections while recognizing recently acquired vocabulary in English which improves your reading
comprehension.

Antonyms
1. ANTONYMS- pairs that show opposite relationship

Examples: How to read an

2. SYNONYMS- pairs that show a similar relationship or have the same meaning

hardworking: diligent :: joyful: happy hardworking is to diligent as joyful is to happy.

3. CAUSE AND EFFECT- Involves a noun or verb that leads to the other word

rainy: wet :: sunny: dry rainy is to wet as sunny is to dry.
smoking: lung cancer :: studying: good grades smoking is to lung cancer as studying is to good
grades.

4. PART TO WHOLE- pairs that show the first word as part of the second word

5. LOCATION- Where something can be found

Examples: How to read an analogy?


Philippines: Asia :: Switzerland: Europe Philippines is to Asia as Switzerland is to Europe.
sunrise: east :: sunset: west sunrise is to east as sunset is to west.

6. CLASSIFICATION- Where something can be found

Examples: How to read an analogy?


Ballet : dance :: frog : amphibian ballet is to dance as frog is to amphibian.
knife : weapon::red :color knife is to weapon as red is to color.

7. FUNCTION- How something works

Examples: How to read an analogy?


knife : cut :: pen : write knife is to cut as pen is to write.
blanket : cover :: keyboard : encode blanket is to cover as keyboard is to encode.

8. PERFORMER AND ACTION- In these items, a person is doing something

Examples: How to read an analogy?


Author : write :: Chef : cook. author is to write as chef is to cook.
actor: act :: singer: sing actor is to act as singer is to sing.
9. PERFORMER AND OBJECT- A person working with a tangible object

APPLICATION
Exercise 1:

1. Prepare your art materials (magazine / brochure, pencil, crayons, scissors, glue etc.)
2. Think and list down 2 examples of analogy.
3. Once you already done, cut out picture correspond to each word then paste it on your notebook
4. Use your art materials to add some color/ or decorate your pictures
5. Next, ask yourself about what type of analogy your examples belong to. Write it at the bottom part
of your picture.

SUBJECT DESCIPTION English 7 is a combination of language arts and
literature. The literacy skills of reading, writing,
speaking, listening, comprehending, and thinking are
taught. Students gain practice in grammar,
punctuation and writing skills. In literature, we will
discuss Philippine classics and contemporary
literature, including short stories, novels, dramas, and
nonfiction. Personal connections, interpretations and
responses to literature are made to show
understanding of the text.
