Assignment 1 (RM)

This document contains the answers to two questions about rock mechanics. [1] It describes the importance of rock mass classification and Bieniawski's Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system, which uses six parameters to classify rock masses into structural regions. [2] It explains two strength indices - point load index, which relates point load strength to core diameter, and Protodyaknov index, which characterizes coal strength based on impact blows and height in a volumeter.

ASSIGNMENT I

Name - Nikhil Kumar Singh

Subject - Rock Mechanics

Q1. Describe the importance of rock mass classification and explain

Bieniskiwi’s Geomechanics ?

Ans: The importance of rock mechanics is stated below:

- Improving the quality of site investigations by calling for the
minimum input data as classification parameters.
- Providing quantitative information for design purposes.
- Enabling better engineering judgement and more effective
communication on a project.
- provide a basis for understanding the characteristics of each rock
mass
Bieniskiwi’s Geomechanics :-
Bieniawski (in 1976) published the details of a rock mass classification
called the Geomechanics Classification or the Rock Mass Rating (RMR)
system. Over the years, this system has been successively refined as
more case records have been examined and the reader should be aware
that Bieniawski has made significant changes in the ratings assigned to
different parameters.
The following six parameters are used to classify a rock mass using
the RMR system:
1)Uniaxial compressive strength of rock material
2)Rock Quality Designation (RQD)
3)Spacing of discontinuities
4)Condition of discontinuities
5)Groundwater conditions
6)Orientation of discontinuities
In applying this classification system, the rock mass is divided into a number
of structural regions and each region is classified separately. The
boundaries of the structural regions usually coincide with a major
structural feature such as a fault or with a change in rock type. In some
cases, significant changes in discontinuity spacing or characteristics, within
the same rock type, may necessitate the division of the rock mass into a
number of small structural regions or domains.

Q2. Explain strength indices with their importance –

(a) Point load
(b) Protodyaknov

Ans : (a) Point load : Point Load (PL) is a test that aims at characterizing
rock materials in terms of strength. It is an index test, meaning that it
can be performed relatively quickly and without the necessity of
sophisticated equipment to provide important data on the mechanical
properties of rocks. Index tests have been widely used in soil mechanics
(ex., particle size distribution, relative density, Atterberg Limits, water
content) but are recently introduced in rock mechanics.
Is(d) = P/d2
Where, Is(d) = point load strength of the core
P = load at rupture
(b) Protodyaknov : The Protodyakonov Rock Strength Scale was
originally devised to be an index relating to compressive
strength, and was defined as the strength in kgf/cm 2 divided by
100. Protodyakonov Impact Strength Index (PSI) is a way of
characterizing coal strength, which has immense possibility for
practical implementation in coal cutting and drilling. It also
gives an idea about the uniaxial compressive strength of the
rock.
PSI = (20 x n)/h

Where, PSI = Protodyakonov strength index,

n = no of blows,
h = height in the volumeter
