God Speaks
God Speaks
Psalm 19:1-14
Last Sunday, we talk about the Book. The Bible at the time of Nehemiah was in progress and was
still evolving into completion. The Bible that I am referring to was about the Book of the Law or the
“Torah” which was written by Moses.
After the completion of rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem for the protection of the people of
Israel from the treacherous attack of the enemy from the outside, Nehemiah sense, that there was an
urgent need of reconstruction or rebuilding in the inside of man which causes them to forget God and
had them drawn away from His presence doing evil things. And God, by His grace moved within their
hearts to cause them to demand an urgent need of God’s words.
As one man, in unison, as they gathered together spontaneously, they cried out loud, “Bring Us
the Book!” Then, it was read to them all including children who could understand.
They wept bitterly, in great sorrows for they had sinned against the Holy God. They turn from
their wicked ways and obey the Word of God. They acknowledge that it was God himself speaking to
them in power and authority.
Today, God still continue speaking to all humanity, Jews or Gentile, to all tribes, languages and
nations of the earth.
At this juncture, I would like to begin a message from the Scripture in the book of Psalm 19:1-14
(read).
1. THROUGH CREATION
2. THROUGH INSTRUCTION/WORD (The Torah/Bible)
3. MAN’S RESPONSE (Prayer for Forgiveness and Redemption)
Maybe, you had traveled a lot for some reasons, be it for personal reason, business, education,
vacation, leisure time or seeking pleasures in the most beautiful tourist destination of the country or of
the world. And ordinarily, you had reached these places by land, waters and air transportation.
Along the way, you enjoy the panoramic view and splendid beauty of nature. The plains,
the valleys with its charming lilies, the terrific terrain of the mountains and the rolling hills along
with the green forest and misty wild flowers, the gallant rock formations, the quenching thirst
waters from the fountains and the crystal clear waters of spring and waterfalls. The archipelagic
islands and islets, the seas and rivers teeming with fish of different colors and sizes and
comprises of varied species.
And if you are up above the mid air, you can see the clouds like cotton candies and some
form as mountain ranges as if it is within your reach up above the blue sky. During the night, if
you look up above the sky there are the shining stars excluding those according to science
billions of them in the galaxy that could not be seen by our naked eyes.
On daytime, the sun rises and gives light to the uttermost part of the earth. And on
sunsets, we can witness the horizon that signals us to rest our body for a days’ work and gives us
hope that morning will come again and the sun will rise with blazing lights for us to enjoy the
blessedness of the gift of life from the One who cause all these things comes into existence in
great grandeur, majestic and glory.
Have you ever pause for a moment, and ask, who made all these things and why does it
exist? Or maybe, you will say; “These things looks beautiful in its place because of the wisdom of
man, of his skills and ability to improve and develop”, “what a lovely place.” Probably you would
say, “thanks to the ingenuity of man. But don’t you know that before man had exists, the
heavens and the earth are already existing and that man is there to enjoy.
And this is the purpose of the Psalmist in our text 19:1-6, to convey a message to all
mankind, to tell us that the great Someone who cause everything to exist, that is the heavens,
and implying the earth as well and all that is in it, be a living things or non living things. It has
been done by someone of infinite wisdom architecturally designed and magnificently
engineered passionately and beautifully by Him.
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”
They are the great witness, testifying in a voiceless voice and communicated speechless
speech. But the message they are conveying is loud and clear to the ends of the earth, that this
someone is the God supreme over creation for He is the God of all creation. From one end of the
earth to the other, and everywhere in between and beyond, He is God.
Many are still seeking God in all creation, but He is not there, for He is not a part and
parcel of all creation. They keep on searching and looking for the meaning and purpose of life
but they found nothing.
Creation points man to the Supreme Creator to find his identity, meaning and purpose
in life in the Divine Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. Listen to His word through Apostle Paul, he
tells us the Preeminence/Supremacy of Christ. Colossians 1:16-17, “For by Him all things were
created visible and invisible – All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all
things, and in Him all things hold together.”
Your identity, the meaning of your existence and the purpose of your life is in the Lord
of all creation – the Son of God – Jesus Christ. That is the message o f God in Psalms 19:1-6.
“Voiceless voice, speechless speech”, but the message is loud and clear; making known the Lord
God of Creation!
The second part of the Psalm teaches us who God is and what God wills. The lord’s
Torah – we would call it Scripture – is a word that we can actually understand and gives us
words to follow.
Each phrase begins with a synonym for the Torah of the Lord; Torah, decrees, precepts,
commandments, fear, and ordinance – are a reference to the written word of God revealed in
the Scripture. “Torah” is not here “Law” in the legal sense, but as “Instructions” in a more
holistic sense. It is translated perfect, it means in the Hebrew mind complete or sufficient.
It means in the Bible alone God has given the humanity all things that are necessary for
the proper understanding of who He is, who we are, how He has acted in the past and what He
expects from us. Nothing else needed to be revealed to humanity about God or his plan to
human race. All is there written what they needed to know about Him. It is complete and
sufficient for belief and behavior. When it is sufficient and complete then nothing is needed and
to be added, more than enough to change and transform our lives to the glory of God.
REVIVING TO THE SOUL
God revives the soul, makes wise the simple, enlightens the eye, endures forever and is
altogether righteous. Why? It is because that is who He is. His revelation reveals, reflects and is
consistent with his nature and character. It points us to the One who can accomplish those
things in us. He gives us himself and we find all those things in Him. It is the word of God that
points us to the God of the word who then completely satisfies our soul with himself.
The Bible is such a part of a Christian country in name like the Philippines who often fail
to appreciate, much more neglect, rather than giving emphasis of much important as the means
of grace that Scripture is. This Psalms invites all who claimed to be Christians much this country,
the largest Christian population if the Asia-Pacific and fifth in the world. The transforming life
changing power, that we hold in our hands. And it does by offering promises about what the
word does (revives the soul, makes wise the simple, enlighten the eye, and so on). Let me repeat
what I have told you last Sunday – that owning the Bible is not the same of knowing the Bible.
Let us not be hypocrites, like the Jewish religious leaders in Jesus time. These people
were blinded by their traditions and religion. Good works and self righteousness draws them
away or had made them fell to the saving grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.
If the creation bear witness of God the Creator in verses 1-6; the Word, Torah, or the
Scriptures points and bear witness to the Son of God, Jesus, the savior of the world, that by
believing in Him, they will have eternal life. John 5:39, 45-47, “You search the Scriptures because
you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me. Yet you
refuse to come to me that you may have life. Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father.
There is one who accuses you; Moses, on whom you have set your hope. For if you believe
Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how
will you believe my words.”
They have set their hope to the one whose writings points them, leads them, bear
witness to them, to the saving savior through his faithful works on the cross by obeying the will
of the Father, to lay down his life for whom the Father has given to him.
Why, those people do not listen or believe in Jesus? Jesus said himself, “But I know that
you do not have the love of God within you.” John 5:42
Love the word of God, the Bible or the Torah, his instructions. Treasure them, as the
precious gifts from God. Aren’t you glad that God has told you how to live? Verse 10, “More to
be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and dripping of the
honeycomb.” Psalm 19:10
Gold, money or treasure is not the most desirable, most valuable possessions on earth,
to long for or desire for in life. Common mistake of many among us is we trust gold more than
God at his word. Many people long and seek to their utmost desire, their focus and priority is
the sweetness of honey to satisfy the appetite of the flesh. They put their trust in them much
more to the futility of their mind and callousness of their hearts, they become their idols to
which the loving God hated the most.
How many of you had ended in sorrows and pain? How many of you have broken
relationships? How many of you have broken marriages? Broken homes and families? How
many of you wore beautiful, sweet smiles from the outside but suffering in agony and full of
worries in the inside due to broken hearts?
Lovers of money, lovers of self, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God is the
affection and foremost desire of a hearts drowned by wealth, material and possessions of this
world. Listen to Apostles word to his young protégé Timothy in the faith, (read 1 Tim. 6:10; 2
Tim. 3:14-16).
Let us joined with the Psalmist, who is overjoyed to be a part of the people, that God
has blessed with the laws and promises of the Bible. Moses wrote in Deuteronomy 4:7-8 (read).
As the sun gives light all over the earth and nothing is hidden in all creation in nature, so
much so with the word of God. Nothing in us is covered even to the darkest part of our inner
man. The illuminating and enlightening and deep penetrating of God’s word will shine and sheds
light revealing everything of our nature much more of our depravity not in part but total.
The word of God will convict us of our sin, be it hidden, and presumptuous sins. But the Psalmist
said, “But let them not have dominion over me!” It implies that the cleansing of whatever sin in his life
has been done through the forgiveness of all his sins. These were being confirmed by the word which
says “Then I shall be blameless and innocent of great transgressions.” Thus the word completed its
purpose in bringing restoration of one’s soul. Lost but now found through the word of God.
“The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever.” The word fear is sometimes referred as
cowering in terror before some awful being who is about to strike you dead. But that is not what it
means at all. It means respect, honest respect for God, “That”, says the Psalmist, “is clean”, and it will
keep you clean, too. It is “enduring forever”. The fear of the Lord produces a quality of life which keeps
you from defiling yourself, which was the earnest prayer of a forgiven sinner. “Let the words of my
mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight”.
Praying to the Lord of his life and to the One who is our Redeemer, paying the full amount by his
precious blood due on our behalf for our deliverance or salvation from sin and it’s dominion over us.
Jesus is our Lord, our Rock; stable, immovable, sure foundation and our Redeemer.
How about you? Whom you will trust? The God speaks to us whom we confess our sins and to
put our trust. . .
- To God who is the Supreme Creator, to which the heavens declare his glory
- To the Lord, our Rock and our Redeemer, who forgive all our sins – his Name is Jesus, the
Christ/Messiah
Trust the word of God for you to live continually a transformed and sanctified lives. Desire or
crave always for his holy word. . “Like new born babes crave for pure spiritual milk for you to
grow in your salvation. . .” 1 Peter 2:2
Beloved children of God, as we have seen, God speaks through his creation, revealing
himself that he is the Lord God of all creation in all his majesty and glory. God speaks through his
word, revealing his character and nature. Through his word, he also shows that our desire
should be for him. The word of God shows, the lost man, however, did not live up to the
demands of God’s holy nature and that his desire is not for him. It brings the lost man face to
face with his needs to be reconciled to his holy God, and shows that it can take place only by
repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The word of God also points the believers
to the God of the word, bringing about an ever deepening love for the God who loved him first.
God is faithful. May, he will find you faithful as well by being faithful. .
