This document summarizes an experiment to calculate the specific gravity of asphalt material. It includes an introduction stating that specific gravity is the ratio of a material's weight to an equal volume of water. The experiment involves soaking asphalt in water for 24 hours. The objectives are stated as calculating the specific gravity of aggregate asphalt bituminous. The procedure, results, and calculation formula are provided. The specific gravity is calculated to be 1.12 with potential sources of error noted. In conclusion, calculating specific gravity provides information about the material and standard values are around 1.03, though the measurement can change with temperature or errors.

Introduction:
Specific gravity for any material means that the ratio of weight of a given volume
of material to the weight of an equal volume of water at 25C.
In this experience we will calculate the S.G for asphalt material by soaking it in
water for 24 hours.

Abstract:
We will talk about in this report for the experience of S.G of aggregate asphalt
bituminous and apparatus and materials that we should use, and the
temperature that will be the material in water batch by using pycnometer and
other errors must avoid it.

Objectives:
Calculate the specific gravity for aggregate asphalt bituminous.

Methods and materials:

Material: ( aggregate, asphalt cement, semi solids bituminous )
*Distilled or deionized water_freshly boiled and cooled, Distilled or deionized
water shall to be used to fill the pycnometer and beaker.
Apparatus:( Pycnometer, water batch, thermometer)

Procedure:
1. Preparation of a sample and heat with care, then put it in a pycnometer and measure the
weight.
2. The second we prepare the same pycnometer and same volume, we put inside water with
25C temperature after dry the pycnometer.
3. Measure the weight before and after add water.
4. We put asphalt bituminous in pycnometer and let for room temperature 25c then put it in
the water batch.
5. Measure the weight after that, then add the water at a surface water.
C− A
6. Then we calculate S.G= : so that :
( B−A )−(D−C )
C: weight of pycnometer and asphalt B: weight of pycnometer and water
A: weight of empty pycnometer D: weight of pycnometer with water & asphlt
Results & discussion:
The results that we calculate it in laboratory:
A= 19.6 g C=32.3 g
B= 44.4 g D=45.7 g
32.3−19.6
S.G= =1.12
( 44.4−19.6 ) −¿ ¿
-This value has an error because; the pycnometer not the same weight.
-The strength in this material is aggregate and the asphalt cement is the bond between them.
When the values of S.G equal:
0.2 that’s mean 20% of martial will submerge
1.2 that’s mean 100% of martial submerge
*When the temperature of asphalt increase that will be weak in strength.

Conclusion:
Calculating the specific gravity for asphalt material by pycnometer at the
standard conditions such as 25c at room temperature.
The specific gravity changes with the temperature of water or the asphalt
sample, and standard the S.G=1.03 typically.
The specific gravity will change again by some errors will happen.
