Tableau Essential Training

.twb files store visualizations without source data

.tds files store information such as passwords and server address needed to access a data source
.tdm files stores a connection to another Tableau worksheet
.tde files store Tableau data as a filtered and aggregate extract

[ .twbx stores extracted data for viewing in Tableau, keeps source data in file ]

Joining data connections allows you to construct visualizations from multiple data sources, and can also
be used when the same field has different names e.g. ‘customer ID’ and ‘custID’

Headers can prevent data from being read correctly – if you don’t have access to the original file, the
data interpreter can help remove null values. Clicking ‘review the results’ shows a breakdown for the
data cleaning process. ‘Tableau Prep’ can be used for more advanced cleaning.

Dragging a sub-category to the right of a larger category (e.g. product category vs name of specific
product) will expand the visualization to show all data.

The marks card will show operators that are manipulating the data display e.g. SUM. Right clicking the
operator will give a menu where different operators can be found.

Data can be split (such as in text to columns in Excel) using the right arrow at the top of the column in
the data source screen. These newly split columns can be renamed using the same dropdown. The
custom split function gives more control, and can split using defined characteristics.

Stories can be created to make a narrative within tableau (kind of like a slide deck)

To see where data has come from in Tableau, you can view the metadata. The data menu on the top
allows you to see the original data within Tableau

‘CEILING’ rounds any integer up, regardless of whether it is above or below .5 (useful for ordering
minimums).

Data can be analyzed using the analysis menu -> create calculated field

Table calculations can show elements such as proportions, monthly differences or moving averages
within table cells. Percentages can be calculated as a percentage of a row, or a pane within row (panes
are indicated by solid vertical borders).

The analytics tab of the navigation pane allows forecasting a line of best fit.

A crosstab is the Tableau equivalent of a pivot table in excel. Worksheet menu dropdown -> duplicate as
pivot table
