Example of Non Unique Solution of PDE Example 2 General Solution To Homogeneous 1 Order PDE

This document discusses solving two cases of a non-unique, homogeneous first order partial differential equation (PDE) with different boundary conditions. For Case 1 with boundary condition u(x)=1 at x=2, the particular solution is f(x,y)=1+2x-x^2. For Case 2 with boundary condition u(x)=1 at x=1, the solution is not unique and could be f(x,y)=x+3 or f(x,y)=4x-x^2, depending on the coefficients chosen. The solution is non-unique because the boundary condition only specifies the value at one point.

Example of non unique solution of PDE

Example 2 general solution to homogeneous 1st order PDE

Solve𝑥 2𝑥 0for the following two cases

Case 1: Boundary condition is 𝑢 𝑥 1, 𝑥 2𝑥 1

Case 2: Boundary condition is 𝑢 𝑥 1, 𝑥 1 4

The general solution will look like 𝑓 𝑝 𝑥 𝑥 and it is the general solution of 𝑓. To find the particular
solution let us assume 𝑓 𝐴 𝐴 𝑥 𝑥 𝐴 𝑥 𝑥 𝐻. 𝑂. 𝑇.

Case 1: Boundary condition is 𝑢 𝑥 1, 𝑥 2𝑥 1

So 𝑓 𝑥 1, 𝑥 𝐴 𝐴 𝑥 𝐴 𝑥 𝐻. 𝑂. 𝑇 2𝑥 1

Now compare the coefficients of 𝑥

We will obtain 𝐴 1, 𝐴 2, 𝐴 0, 𝐴 0for 𝑖 1.

So the particular solution becomes 𝑓 1 2𝑥 𝑥 .

Case 2: Boundary condition is 𝑢 𝑥 1, 𝑥 1 4

So

𝑓 𝑥 1, 𝑥 1 𝐴 𝐴 𝐴 𝐴 ... 4→𝐴 4 𝐴 𝐴 𝐴 . ..

So we won’t have a unique solution but we will get a solution like

𝑓 𝑥 ,𝑥 4 𝐴 𝑥 𝑥 1 𝐴 𝑥 𝑥 1 . ..

So we do not get a unique solution the different acceptable solutions are

𝑓 𝑥 ,𝑥 𝑥 𝑥 3if 𝐴 1, 𝐴 0for 𝑖 2

𝑓 𝑥 ,𝑥 4𝑥 𝑥 if 𝐴 4, 𝐴 0for 𝑖 2

The solution is not unique as we specified value at only at one location.
