Daily Lessons
1.1 – Matrix Operations and Systems of Linear Equations
 Apply matrix addition, scalar multiplication, matrix multiplication, and matrix
transposition
 Know when matrix addition and matrix multiplication are defined
 Solve a system of equations using row operations on an augmented matrix
 Know when a system is inconsistent, consistent with a unique solution, and consistent
with infinite solutions
1.2 – Vector Spans and Matrix Equations
 Apply row operations to solve problems involving linear combinations and vector spans
 Geometrically describe vector spanning sets
 Determine whether the columns of an mxn matrix span Rm
 Solve and interpret solutions to the matrix equations Ax=b and Ax=0
 Describe solutions sets in vector form
1.3 – Linear Independence and Linear Transformations
 Determine whether a vector set is linearly independent or dependent
 Describe linear dependence relations in vector form
 Understand domain, codomain, and range of a linear transformation
 Provide a graphical representation of the images of a 2D transformation
1.4 – The Matrix of a Linear Transformation
 Find the standard matrix that defines a single transformation
 Find the standard matrix that defines the composition of two transformations
 Determine whether a transformation function is one-to-one and/or onto
1.5 – The Inverse of a Matrix
 Use the inverse of a 2 ×2 matrix to solve a 2D system of equations
 Find the inverse of a 3 ×3matrix
 Use the IMT to show that a matrix is invertible (no need to memorize – a copy of the
IMT will provided on the day of the exam, if needed)
1.6 – LU Factorization
 Find an LU factorization of a matrix A
 Use an LU factorization of A to solve matrix equations of the form Ax = b
