Electrical Machine 2020-2021: TD 8 (Synchronous Motor)

A 500 hp synchronous motor operating at 720 rpm with a line-to-neutral voltage of 790 V and an excitation current of 25 A is analyzed. The synchronous reactance is 22 ohms and the torque angle is 30 degrees. Calculations are done to determine the synchronous reactance current, line current, power factor, horsepower developed, and torque developed. A 150 kW synchronous motor operating at 1200 rpm with a line voltage of 460 V and a synchronous reactance of 0.8 ohms per phase is analyzed. The power versus torque angle curve and torque versus torque angle curve are drawn. The pull-out torque is calculated. A 4000 hp synchronous motor operating at 6600 V and 200 rpm with a synchronous reactance

a. The value of jX S I A .

b. The ac line current.

c. The power factor of the motor.
d. The approximate horsepower developed by the motor.
e. The approximate torque developed at the shaft.

2. A 150 kW, 1200 rpm, 460 V, 3-phase synchronous motor has a synchronous reactance

the following:
a. Draw the power versus torque angle δ curve.
b. Draw the torque versus torque angle δ curve.
c. The pull-out torque of the motor.

3. A 4000 hp (3000 kW), 6600 V, 60 Hz, 200 rpm, Y-connected synchronous motor
