TOPIC: The Concepts of Politics and Governance

I. LEARNING TARGETS:
In this lesson, the learners will be able to;
1. define Politics;
2. identify the various views on Politics;
3. differentiate governance from government;
4. study the following pictures and share their own thoughts.

II. LESSON PROPER


“Man is by nature a political animal.”- Aristotle
Politics- Greek word “politika” which means affairs of the cities.
-as an activity that involves the interaction of people whose relationship is characterized by conflict and
cooperation, and who come together to solve such disagreements through bonding solution.
The Different Views of Politics
1. Art of Government- it focuses on the personnel and machinery of the Government.
2. Public Affairs- Politics is the conduct and management of public interest and therefore, political affairs.
3. Compromise and consensus- Politics attempts to resolve through discussion, compromise, bargaining and consensus,
wherein in people arrived at a binding decision.
4. Power and distribution of resources- politics involves the exercise of authority in the production, distribution, and use
of resources.

What is Government?
State- is a political community that involves four important elements, namely, people, territory, sovereignty and
government.
Government- serves as the bridge that connects the people to the state.
Governance- determines who has power, who makes decisions, how other players their voice heard and how account is
rendered. Governance arises when the government involves the people in its agenda and in the process of policy making.

II. LESSON PROPER:

Political Science- is social science discipline that studies the state and the government.

Majors School of thoughts in Political Science

1. Philosophical Tradition (Political Philosophy)- regarded as the tradition approach to politics. This tradition
underscored the analytical study of doctrines that become the major focus of political thought.
2. Empirical Tradition- politics can be also studied through this tradition. This theory focuses on the observation and
explanation of political phenomenon and involves formulating and testing hypotheses through experimentation.
3. Scientific Tradition- this tradition promotes objective and quantifiable ways of studying politics.
