6.1 Mass communication:


 Mass communication is the study of how people share their information through mass media to
large segments of the population at the same time with an amazing speed.
 Mass communication refers to imparting and exchanging information on a large scale to a wide
range of people.
 Mass communication is the process of transmitting messages to a large number of scattered
audiences.
 Mass communication is the process by which a person, group of people, or organization creates a
message and transmits it through some type of medium to a large, anonymous, heterogeneous
audience.
6.2 Mass communication industries:

1. Press Association: The press association collects news on the running and current affairs and
distribute them to news paper office and other media like radio, television etc. for publicity.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) and Eastern News Agency (ENA) are two (2) such agencies
which provide such functions. Some popular agencies are Reuters, PTI, AFP, AP, UNI etc.

2. Advertising Agencies: Such agencies provide their services on Contract basis. They make every
arrangement to collect and distribute information. They have close contact with various media to
provide a better output.
3. Public Relations Department: Organizations of large scale have their own public relations
department. Such department circulates message like objectives, ideas, principles, policies etc of the
respective organization to the internal members as well as external members of the society.
4. Syndicates: The Syndicate of reporters play significant role in mass communication. They
collect and supply news, image, photo, features, reports, commentary etc: to the mass media like
radio, television, news papers, periodicals etc. for circulating them to mass people.
5. Publication House: Such house made publication on academic, cultural, social and biographical
issues and helps to raise knowledge of general people.
6. Theatre Group: Such group performs drama on various issues related to human life. They provide
entertainment as well as productive lesson to mass people.
7. Film or Movie Industry: Such industry produces movies to entertain people as well as to provide
constructive lesson regarding social affairs. Such industry has the role to make people conscious
about individual, cultural and social responsibility.
8. Public Information Ministry: Such ministry provides valuable service as an agent of mass
communication. It formulates regulations and guidelines for the movement of information in any
country. All parties related to newspaper, radio, television and other media are bound to comply with
its policies and procedure.
9. Research Group or Institute: These sections verify the results of mass communication and provide
necessary advice to their respective client to make mass communication more effective.
10. Others: Novel writers and playwright, Public relation counseling firm, Interment service providers
(ISP); Forum, Association and Department.

6.3 Media of mass communication:

1. Newspaper: A newspaper is a publication containing news and information and advertising,


usually printed on low-cost paper called newsprint. Newspapers are available in daily and weekly
formats, general or special interest and local, regional, and national publications are also exist.
2. Magazine: The magazine is a monthly distribution made up of a variety of articles or blog posts,
typically funded by marketing as well as or even invest in by the audience. Magazines are generally

publicized every week, biweekly, regular monthly, bi-monthly or even quarterly, having a time on
the handle that is certainly prior to the actual time it is really publicized.
3. Book: Book is another important media of mass communication. The book produced in digital
format is known as the e-book.
4. Television: Television is a powerful medium for appealing to mass audiences. Television offers
sight and sound and it makes dramatic and lifelike representations of people and products.
5. Radio: Radio also reaches mass and diverse audiences. Since placement and production costs are
less for radio than for TV, radio is popularly used in village areas.
6. Film: Film is an audio-visual medium of mass communication. It encompasses motion pictures as
individual projects as well as the field in general.
7. Video games: A video game is a computer-controlled game where a video display such as a
monitor or television is the primary feedback device.
8. Internet: Today in the era of globalization internet is the most used media of mass
communication. Specially, social networking media like facebook, twitter, linkedin etc. Great
communities who share different information along with providers for instance email, on the
internet conversation, document shift and also the interlinked websites along with documents of
the World Wide Web.
9. Blogs (web logs): A blog website is usually a site, usually looked after by somebody, having
standard records connected with discourse, information connected with situations or perhaps
interactive media for example graphics or perhaps movie, video, images.
10. Podcast: A podcast is a series of digital-media files which are distributed over the internet using
syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and computers. The host or author of a
podcast is often called a podcaster.
11. Mobile: Mobile phones were introduced in Japan in 1979 but became a mass media only in 1998
when the first downloadable ringing tones were introduced in Finland. The mobile media content
includes ringing tones, mobile gaming, MP3 or MP4 files, music videos, various news,
entertainment and advertising services etc.
12. Outdoor media: Outdoor media are a form of mass media which comprises of billboards, signs,
placards placed inside and outside of commercial buildings or objects like shops or buses, flying
billboards (signs in tow of airplanes) blimps and skywriting.

13. Other Media: Pamphlets, brochures and posters constitute other print media used to disseminate
health messages. There are some traditional media-drama, Jatra stage etc.
