METHOD OF STATEMENT
FOUNDATION WORKS

1.0 Preparation:

Upon completion of soil investigation by using Mackintosh Probe (JKR Probe) at each tower location,
the contractor shall submit a proposal for Foundation Classification for client's approval. In case of Pile
Foundation, a Mechanized Deep Boring Soil Investigation shall be carried out at each of the pile
location.

2.0 Foundation Types:

The following foundation types are mainly used in transmission line:

a. Standard foundation (Pad and Chimney/Column)

b. Pile and pile cap foundation

Where soil condition necessitates as determined initially from the JKR Probe and later by the
Mechanized Deep Boring Soil Investigation, pile foundation shall be installed instead of normal
foundation. Pre-cast concrete pile shall be used for this project. Precast piles 250x250mm as per
TNB's specifications shall be used and shall be driven in vertical position.

Piling rig shall be used for installation of any type of piles. The recommended hammer size shall be
used. Piles driven shall be set to depth or up to refusal according to the design provided for each
piling location and/or approved by Client.

The pile should be driven within the allowed tolerances. Take the records of the penetration rate at
all times during driving.

c. Rock foundation

Exact foundation type to be used at each particular tower location shall be determined depending on
soil investigation carried out in advance.

3.0 Excavation Works:

a. This excavation method statement applies to the Standard foundation (Pad and Chimney) and Rock
Foundation.

b. Formation of Tower Platform / Tower Footing / Tower Base

Depending on the suitability and client's instructions, the tower platform/footing/base shall be
prepared as per TN B's Specification/Approval, such that the excavation shall be arranged for the
single leg setting, template setting, or body setting.

c. Excavation by Machine

Excavators shall be utilized for this work. For the excavation in rock (Rock Foundation), air
operated breaking and drilling equipment shall be required. The excavation process shall be in
accordance with the following procedures:

i. Establish a reference point elevated from ground surface (usually from centre point) for
measuring the depth of pit excavation. Two reference points of the same elevation should be
established for every excavation pit. Mark the diagonal axes of the tower located away from
the crest of excavation pit, while work is in progress.

ii. Excavated material from pit shall be placed at least 1.5 m away from excavated pits and later
utilized as backfill material (if suitable for backfill).

iii. In order to execute the excavation works as much as possible in the dry conditions, sufficient
number of water pumping equipment shall be provided. Temporary drainage system around
excavation pit shall be provided if required and if possible.

iv. In some cases, open cut excavation method may be allowed to prevent soil collapsing. The
sides of excavation pit shall be provided with slope to an angle approximately 45 degrees to 50
degrees. The soil and slope condition shall be monitored at all time so that the sides of the
open excavation shall not collapse. The excavator with a longer boom shall be used wherever
available and possible so that it can move within reasonable distance away from the edge of
excavation pit.

v. Excavation shall be square as far as practical, plumb to depth as shown on the drawing and
wide enough to carry out works safely and properly. Bottom of the excavation pit shall be
cleared of all loose materials. The levelling of the bottom of the excavation pit and trimming
shall be done manually.

vi. For undercut location, undercut excavation shall be done manually.

4.0 Slope Protection:

a. In case where the excavation or the open cut method through benching creates a sloped surface, a
slope protection shall be carried out.

b. In general, as common slope failure is due to the driving force greater than the resisting force, the
general guidelines for slope protection method shall be controlling the driving force, and if
necessary to be followed by increasing the resisting force.

c. Under normal circumstances, the main factor affecting the driving force is water pressure. Seepage
to the slope may increase the soil weight, and may loosen / weakening the natural slip circle. Thus
increasing the risk of a slope failure.

d. Surface runoff may also hasten the weakening of the slip circle. Common effect of surface-runoff
caused erosion is the weakening of a slope toe, and decreasing the resisting force on a slope. Thus
increasing the risk of a slope failure.

e. As a guidelines, in case where the Supervisor foresee a possibility of an erosion occurring to the
slope surface, an earth drain shall be provided to channel the surface runoff away from the slope
surface:

i. The earth drain shall be at the top / crest of the slope and the path shall be at least 5m away
from the slope surface, if the slope is of temporary nature, or 15m away if the slope is more of
a permanent nature, i.e. more than 3 months in rainy season or more than 6 months in dry
weather.

ii. If the exposed slope surface is fairly large, an intermediate earth drain(s) shall be provided
perpendicular the slope surface at an angle to help channel excessive surface runoff away
from the slope surface.

iii. Care shall be taken to ensure that there is no erosion at the bottom I toe of any slope. Any
sign of erosion at the toe shall be rectified immediately, and the surrounding toe shall be
protected by earth drain diverting the surface runoff away from the toe area.

f. In an exposed slope area, a permanent turfing shall be applied. Turfing shall be of a closed type in
non-cohesive soil, or spot type in cohesive soil. A suitable turfing shall be applied properly as soon
as practicable.

i. Turfing shall only be carried out after an effective earth drain system is already in place.

ii. Area to be covered shall be the critical area as determined by the supervisor, and/or as per
instruction by an engineer or project manager.

iii. Turfing need not be installed immediately while any work is being carried out as constant
supervision at site is available. When the work in the area is completed, then the turfing
works shall be carried out.

g. In case of heavy rain, a suitable temporary covering such as tarpaulin, canvass, plastic sheeting or
any such available covering shall be used to cover the exposed slope during the heavy rain. This is
applicable only near high-risk slope of more than 71- degree angle, and 30m high.

h. In case of landslide, or high risk slope area as advised by an engineer or Project Manager,
immediate temporary covering of plastic or canvass type shall be provided.

i. The covering shall be at least 1.5m beyond the crest of the slope extending along the exposed
slope face and at least 1.5m beyond the toe of the slope.

ii. If the covering is not of enough length, then an overlap of at least 1 m shall be provided
between the sheets.

iii. An earth drainage system at the crest / top of slope area shall be provided to divert any
surface runoff away from the slope surface.

iv. An embankment from the surrounding soil shall be placed at the toe I bottom of the slope to
provide additional resisting force to the slope. The embankment shall extend along the toe
area to the minimum height of 1 m. The base of the embankment shall not be less than 1.5m.

v. The area at the toe / bottom of the slope shall be diverted from any surface runoff by a
system of earth drain.

vi. The area shall be monitored daily during the construction works and any repair and
improvement shall be carried out accordingly.

i. In any circumstance, any exposed slope shall be monitored as regularly as practicable. Any
deterioration shall immediately be addressed by suitable repair accordingly.
