Course Objectives
The course will provide insights into the management of strategic and functional issues in the
operational environment of business organization.
Module I
Introduction to Operations Management. Operations Strategy in a global environment.
Manufacturing and non-manufacturing operations and their classifications.
Process analysis – Bottleneck analysis, throughput time, cycle time, Little‟s law. Capacity
Planning framework Productivity measurement.
Module II
Design of manufacturing processes. Types of layouts -Design of process and product layouts,
Line balancing. Location strategy. Layout strategy – Types of layout. Design of service system
-Service blueprinting.
Module III
Types of inventory. Inventory control for deterministic demand items. Economic Order Quantity
Newsvendor model. Inventory control systems – P system and Q system.
Module IV
Demand Forecasting. Need for aggregate production planning and alternatives for managing
demand & supply. Material Requirements Planning – Lot sizing, MRP Logic. Manufacturing
Resources Planning.
Philosophy of Lean Management – Waste elimination as the core logic of JIT.
Module V
Dimensions of quality Total Quality Management Seven tools of Quality Control. Six sigma
approach to quality control –DPMO, DMAIC
Statistical Process Control.
