Oils and Aterials Eport: Site Investigation Manual - 2002 Soils and Materials Report

The document provides guidance on preparing a Soils and Materials Report to summarize the results of field and laboratory investigations for a road project. The report should include information on climate, geology, field investigations of subgrades and construction materials, laboratory test results, locations of problem soils and structures requiring foundations, as well as recommendations regarding subgrades, materials selection, and special construction considerations. Suggested report sections and contents are also outlined.

Site Investigation Manual - 2002 Soils and Materials Report

8. SOILS AND MATERIALS REPORT

A Soils and Materials Report should be prepared upon completion of all the field and
laboratory investigations, summarizing all their results in such a manner as to be readily
usable by the design engineers (i.e. pavement, highway, foundation engineers, possibly
including structural engineers).

Location maps of materials (borrow pits and quarries in particular) are particularly
useful, and should be attached, from which materials utilization diagrams may be
prepared to optimize haulage of pavement materials.

All the potential soil problems encountered, such as swelling clays, etc., as well as the
locations of structures requiring foundation design, should be indicated in the soils and
materials report.

Note: It is, however, beyond the scope of the report to detail definite and comprehensive
solutions to the soils problems encountered, or to offer foundation design
recommendations.

A suggested table of contents for the Soils and Materials Report is as follows:
