Effects of passive Bi-axial ankle stretching while walking on uneven
terrains in older adults with chronic stroke

What was the reason for this study?

The objective of this study is to determine the association of bi-axial ankle stretching with
ankle stiffness and gait on an uneven surface and the balance performance were investigated
by trying to decide whether isokinetic passive bi-axial ankle training reduces the ankle joint
stiffness and increases the ankle ROM. It also examines whether the altered hemiparetic ankle
stiffness affects the kinematics during walking on an uneven surface.

What specific question was asked?
The study tries to find the answers for questions such as whether bi axial angle training
reduces the ankle stiffness and improve the angle ROM?, Whether angle stiffness affects the
kinematics during walking through the uneven surface? And Whether angle stretching reduces
angle stiffness and improves the clinical balance measurements and walking performance on a
rough surface.

Participants (age, gender, background):

Fifteen older adults with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis (N = 15; mean age = 65 years)
participated in a total of 12 bi-axial ankle ROM exercises that consisted of three 30-min training
sessions per week for four weeks. The eligible criteria for the people were those who are
between 50 and 80 years of age, having chronic post-stroke hemiparesis, weighing<80 kg,
walking independently on a level surface and no abnormal muscle tone or slightly increased
ankle joint muscle group at the end of the passive ankle ROM only.

Experimental task:
Necessary clinical tests and gait performance in even and uneven surfaces were
evaluated before and after training.

Independent variable(s):
           No independent Variables

Dependent variable(s):
Angle stiffness, mobility measurements, walking speed, step length, and type of the
surface are the dependent variables in this experiment.

Statistical methods used:

Statistics were obtained for clinical and kinematic variables to depict the demographic
characteristics, step, and joint kinematics of the subjects during a gait on even and uneven
surface and ankle stiffness by comparing pre and post AMT parameters.
Summarize findings:

The results reveal that the four-week ankle stretching training with isokinetic passive bi-
axial joint movements using the AMT was effective in decreasing the DF/PF ankle stiffness, thus
improving the clinical balance and mobility measurements, and finally enhanced the joint and
step kinematics while walking on uneven terrains.
Finally, describe one part of the experiment you would have done differently, whether it’s
testing a different hypothesis, measuring different dependent variables, or using other
statistical techniques to analyze the results.
The journal can include study including variation in the intensity, frequency, and duration of the
training session. This may also affect the AMT outcomes. Also, further investigations on the
effects of stretching other muscles in the leg are necessary
