Process Selection

The document discusses process selection, which refers to deciding how production of goods or services will be organized. Process selection considers capital intensity, process flexibility, and has implications for capacity, facilities, equipment, and work systems. The main types of processes discussed are job shop, batch, repetitive, continuous, and project-based processes. Examples are provided for each type.

MBA Production Management
• Process selection – refers to deciding on the
way of production of goods or services will be
organized.
It has major implications for capacity planning,
layout or facilities, equipment, and design of
work systems.

• Process selection occurs as a matter of course

when new products or services are being
planned. However, it also occurs periodically due
to technological changes in products or
equipment, as well as competitive pressures.
1.Capital intensity – the mix of equipment or
labor that will be used by the organization.

process
strategy
2. Process flexibility – the degree to which the
system can be adjusted to changes in processing
requirements due to such factors as changes in
product or service design, changes in volume
processed, and changes in technology.
Technology
Technological innovation – the discovery and development of new or
improved products, services, or processes for producing or providing them.

Technology – the application of scientific discoveries to the development and

improvement of goods and services and operations processes.

High technology- refers to the most advanced and developed equipment and
methods.
Operation management is primarily concerned in three
kinds of technology.

Product and service technology – is the discovery and development of new products and
services. This is done mainly by the researchers and engineers, who use the scientific
approach to develop new knowledge and translate that into commercial applications.

Process technology- includes methods, procedures and equipment used to produce

goods and provide services.

Information Technology (IT) – is the science and us of the computers and other electronic
equipment to store, process, and send information.
Technology as
Competitive Advantage

Technological innovation in products and

services, and in processing technology can
produce tremendous benefits for
organization. technological advances can yield
competitive advantages for companies by
increasing quality, lowering cost, increasing
productivity, and expanding processing
capabilities.
5 Process Types
Job shop 1. Operates on a small scale.
high-flexibilty using general
purpose equipment and
skilled workers are important
characteristics of a shop.
• Ex. Veterinarian clinic
2. moderate volume of goods
and services is desired, and it
can handle a moderate variety
in products and services.
Ex. Patisserie baking
production

Batch
Repetitive 3. Higher volume of
standardize goods or services
are needed, repetitive
processing is used. The
standardize output means
only slight flexibility of
equipment’s is needed. Skills
of workers is generally low.
• Ex. San Miguel Beer
Production
Continuous.
4.Very high volume of
nondiscrete, highly
standardize output is desired,
a continuous system is used.
• Ex. Oil refinery
5. A non-repetitive nonroutine
set of activities directed
toward a unique goal within a
limited time frame.
• Ex. Repair shops,
consulting
