Kindergarten-12 (K-12) is a newly integrated curriculum to our education system here in the

Philippines. It is under the Department of Education that aims to enhance our learner’s basic skill, to
produce more competent students and to prepare graduates to lifelong learning and employment. “K”
stands for Kindergarten and “12” refers to the succeeding 12 years of basic education, namely, 6 years
of elementary education, 4 years of junior high school, and 2 years of senior high school. Whereas in
senior high school, students can choose 3 stands under Academic Track; Accountancy, Business and
Management (ABM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMMS) and Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics (STEM)-HEALTH/NON HEALTH. According to an impact report, Senior High strands
under the Academic Track are still the most chosen tracks for all incoming Grade 11 students.

Assessing the post-College and Career Awareness and Readiness Seminar (CARES) by local social
enterprise Edukasyon.ph, the report showed that ABM, HUMSS and STEM were most consistently
marked as the top choices of students particularly in STEM-Health strand.

On a statistics made by the Department of Education in the year 2016, 228,621* students are
enrolled in the STEM strand making it the second most enrolled career path in the Academic Track. But
what are the reasons behind upon choosing STEM (particularly health) strand?

Different jobs motivate people in varied ways. It is one of the factors which can possibly affect in
choosing the strand because some students also take it into consideration the kind of job that they want
to have in the future. It has been said by Splaver (2000) that “personality” plays an important role
in the choosing of the right course or strand. A student does not choose something that that not
fits him or her. Meanwhile, it is known that STEM-Health strand is an avenue that develops the
students’ abilities to solve societal problems through the help of scientific and mathematical skills.
Investigative type of students or those who are passionate in math and science are fit to take this
strand. Students who are also passionate in dealing with the improvement of human and animal health
are also considered.

(RESEARCH STUDY, HIGH COMPENSATION, IN DEMAND JOBS)

Health professionals play a crital and important role in the society improving access and quality health
care for the population. They provide essential services that promote health, prevent diseases and
deliver health care services to individuals, families and communities. Health related professions are in
demand because now a days there are many diseases and health problems that cannot be cured and we
need lots of health care providers to help us find antidotes so that we can cure such diseases and we all
know that this generation is a very active one and we can’t prevent ourselves in illnes that’s why we
need more medical professionals to help us take care of our body when it is not okay
