GLA Seeks U.N. Support for American Hostage
Submits Application for Relief to U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention

(Washington, D.C.) On Wednesday, January 14, 2020, the Global Liberty Alliance submitted
an application for relief to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention on
behalf of U.S. citizen, Alina López, who has been falsely imprisoned by the Cuban government
on espionage charges since 2017.

The 60-year-old South Florida resident, Cuban-born, was a teacher in a Miami-Dade public
school before she was unlawfully detained in Cuba almost four years ago. She was found
guilty by a secret military tribunal. The Cuban state does not recognize any foreign
citizenship for people born in Cuba, so Ms. López was tried as a Cuban citizen. Her over-90-
year-old mother has fought for her freedom since her arrest, traveling to Cuba as often as
her pension would allow.

“It is unfortunate that Alina’s case had to be escalated to the Working Group on Arbitrary
Detention at the U.N. U.S. and Cuban officials need to work together to resolve this matter.
Alina qualifies for a humanitarian release and it is time for her to come home,” Jason Poblete,
GLA President said.

You can read more about GLA’s advocacy for Alina López on her case page, and about GLA’s
advocacy for liberty worldwide on GLA’s website.
