Shah Deniz Midstream Geotechnical Investigations

Factual Report
07-Jun-2001

2.2 Industry Standards

All field work shall be directed by an experienced professional geotechnical

engineer. If significant variation in soil stratification is encountered during
investigation, additional borings may be required. Likewise, if no variation in soil
stratification and soil properties is encountered, a reduction in the total number of
planned boreholes shall be the result. The boring program shall be planned in
such that this objective is feasible. However, any change in the number of borings
and depth of boring shall be agreed with the Company.

3.0 SOIL INVESTIGATION

The soil investigation shall be conducted into two parts

Part I of the Soil Investigation shall be consist of all necessary field work required
for borings along with Laboratory testing of samples obtained from field, based on
Specification K20-2C.
Part II of Soil investigation shall consist of Engineering analysis and preparation of
a report based on section 2.4 and 3.4 of Specification K20-2C.
Based on economics, the Company may split Part 1 and Part 11 of work between
two different GSO’s.

In this case the designated GSO for Part 1 of the work shall provide all necessary
boring data and testing results in form a report in English to the Company.
This is to ensure that designated GSO for part 11 of soil investigation has all
necessary information to perform engineering calculations and prepare a Report
which can be used for design of foundation for ACG Produced water system.

4.0 IN SITU TESTING

GSO to provide list of field tests to be conducted as per section 2.2 of KBR
specification K20-2C.

The following tests shall be used as guidelines:

- Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) in boreholes, at 1 meter, 3 meter and 5

meter and then at 3 meter spacing below.
- Torvone and pocket penetrometer tests in cohesive soils
- Friction-Cone and Piezocone Penetration Tests (CPT and PCPT) at selected
locations.
- GSO to provide location details and information on the test techniques. The
borehole logs shall include the results of the SPTs and undrained shear versus
boring depth.

5.0 LABORATORY TESTING

GSO for Part 1 of the work shall provide list of field tests to be conducted as per
section 2.3 of KBR specification K20-2C.

The laboratory program shall comprise of geotechnical classification tests,

chemical analyses, stiffness and strength tests. The laboratory work that should
take place on site / visual description of soil samples, logging of disturbed and
undisturbed soil samples, including photographs, water contents, wet and dry unit
weights and Atterbergs Limits determination / further testing shall be performed at
accredited laboratory: sieve analyses, hydrometer tests, calcium carbonate
content determinations, organic contents, triaxial testing and particle density.

GSO for Part 1 of the work to provide information about laboratory sample
handling and the results of the laboratory tests and general information on test
procedures respectively.

The general guidelines for the laboratory test program shall be as follows:

- Classification and water content determination on all samples.

- Unit weight determination on the total samples, but with the emphasis on
Shelby tube samples taken from the top 5 meter layer.
- Undrained compressive test.
- Sieve and hydrometer analyses mainly upon the upper 5 meter of the material.
- Atterbergs limit test on approximately ¼ of the samples but with emphasis on
the upper 5 meter of material.
- Very limited triaxial tests, only in materials in the upper 5 meter to assess
effective friction angle for foundation analyses.

6.0 GROUND WATER

The water table at site shall be recorded on 15 meter deep boring if it is within this
zone.
Below this, the water table can be assumed to be deep enough so as not to cause
any effect on foundation.

Reduction in strength of soils during saturated conditions due to rains, spills, etc.
shall be addressed in the report.

7.0 PERMEABILITY TEST

GSO for Part 1 of the work to conduct a limited number of tests (at least 1 at the
tank location) to determine the soil permeability at 0.5 meter, 1 meter, 1.5 meter
using triaxial permeability test on sample compacted to 95% of maximum dry
density.

8.0 SOILS REPORT

GSO for Part 11 of the work shall provide comprehensive soils report showing
results of laboratory testing, foundation recommendation and perform all
necessary calculations.

The following soil design parameter shall be provided as a “minimum” in the final
soil report
If the results vary, a minimum, maximum and mean values shall be recommended.
