Terminology of
Photography

In this section I will explain the definitions that come with using a camera
• Aperture: The size of the opening in the camera lens, which dictates how much light gets into the
camera. It is measured in f and is controlled on the lens of the camera.
• ISO: The sensitivity of the camera to the light, usually measured in numbers like 100 and 200. The
lower the number the less sensitive to light and is more optimized for well lit areas.
• White Balance: Is the level of natural colours in a picture, it is used to make photos in different
lighting look more life like.
• Exposure: This is the level of lighting in a photo, and dictates how light and dark it is.
• Shutter Speed: The shutter speed is how long the lens of a camera stays open to let light in. The
longer the shutter speed the longer the camera will capture the photo for.
Types of • In this section of the PowerPoint I will be going
over the main types of photography and giving an
Photography example for each

This type of photography involves taking
photographs to promote a product or service.
Typically, to promote a product or service, a
company will have pictures taken, usually of
the product in an aesthetically pleasing and
eye-catching way to encourage people to buy
their product.

These photos are usually found in public on

bus stops, busses and billboards, but can also
be found in magazines, newspapers and
digital media like on TV.

This is a photo taken of a Bombay Sapphire Gin bottle. As you can see its eye-catching and would draw

Sports photography is a difficult type of photography that
involves taking photos of sporting events and making sure to
capture the correct moments to properly remember the
match. The difficulty comes from the fact that in sports, each
match highlight can happen in a split second therefore the

capture the perfect frame. After these photos are taken
many are used to represent the match when a newspaper or

advertising to promote a streaming service for a certain
sport.
This photo is of Muhammed Ali and Sonny Liston at their

and 44 seconds. Many regard the final blow as a Phantom
