What are
the factors contributed to the origin and spread of library
movement in Andhra?

Introduction: Andhra library movement is the people’s


movement and has grown with the support of dedicated library
workers and selfless persons. The library workers effectively
spread this movement to the villages.

Importance of library movement


1. To spread the ideas of social reformers: through journals and
books and bring awareness among the people and to remove
superstitions, social evils, illiteracy, poverty.

2. Library movement became the springboard to all other


movements in Andhra i.e. social, political and literal.
3. This movement played a greater role in the reform movements.
4 his library movement supported the independence movement
and prepared workers to fight for the independence movement.
5. To inculcate the patriotism to the nationalist movements
6. To promote Telugu language and literature
7. To bring awareness to the people about our culture and
traditions
8. It promoted the formation and spread of Andhra movement

Factors contributed to the origin and spread of library


movement:

1. The introduction of printing in Telugu in 1806 gave impetus


for the spread of publication activity. As the number of printed
books increased the establishment of public libraries, reading
clubs, school and college libraries also steadily increased.
2. The spread of English education contributed to the growth
of literacy among the population. The need for reading rooms and
libraries was felt strongly in their leisure time.
3. The partition of Bengal in 1905 and the political awakening
in the country had its own impact on Andhra Desa. Stalwarts
like Lala Lajapat Rai and B.C. Pal entered into the freedom
movement and toured the whole country including Andhra Desa
inspired and awakened the people to dedicate themselves to the
cause of freedom.

4 The Vandemataram movement had great impact on the social


and political stirrings, the youth felt the need for a ‘temple’ where
they could meet and decide their future programmes.

5 Andhra movement began in 1913. This Andhra movement


helped to spread the library movement in Andhra Pradesh.

6 During this period in the princely state of Baroda under its


enlightened ruler Sayaji Rao Gackwad, supported the
establishment of a public library system in his state with the
expertise of William Boarden an American. It attracted the
attention of social and library workers in Andhra.

7 Besides the spread of a communication network by road, by


rail and by post resulted in an increase of agricultural production
by making information accessible to the villagers and in this
respect the libraries played a vital role and created a new
awareness among the rural population.
8 The middle class people improved educationally and
economically and They showed interest in social reforms and
agitated against the child marriages and started widow marriages
and publicized the use of Telugu language as the official
language.
6. The language movement was launched by Gidugu Rama
Murthy Pantulu, which also contributed for the spread of the
library movement. The language movement popularly known as
“Vyavaharika Bhashodyamam '' contributed to the growth of
reading habits among the common people.
7. Gurajada Appa Rao had tried to introduce social reforms
through his literary works. Komma Raju Lakshman Rao
contributed a lot to make awareness about science. Kasinathuni
Nageswara Rao is the founder of “Andhra Patrika''. He supplied
his Daily Newspaper and other publications freely to most of the
libraries in the state of his personal interest. Thus the above
mentioned factors contributed to the origin and spread of library
movement by the people.

Library pilgrimages

1. Public libraries in Andhra

• 1662-Madras saint george library by captain whitfield,


mainly for British officials but it was accessibility for all
• 1800 - A private library belonging to the Paravastu family
was declared open for the public. It was subsequently
developed as Arsha Grandhalaya,

• 1839- In Rajahmundry a public library was opened by


Justice James Thomas . Perhaps it is the first public library
in Andhra
• 1850-Theosophical library in Guntur
• 1886- Saraswati Nilayam was started by Manthane
Adinarayana Murthy, a school teacher. (first modern
library)
• 1900-veeresalingam library in rajahmundry
• 1901- sri krishnadevaraya andhra bhasa nilayam in
hyderabad
• Simha Chalapathi library -Vijayanagaram
• Young mens literary association in guntur
• C.V.N. Library, Ongole (1890),
• Rama Mohan Library, Vijayawada (1911).
It was estimated that by the end of 1914 there were nearly 163
libraries functioning in different parts of Andhra Desa.

Library conferences in A.P.: From 1914 the association


conducted these conferences helped to publicize library
movement.Started training programmes for the establishment
and training of libraries.one month training programme was
started in Ram Mohan library, this training expenses were
bearded by Tanguturi prakasam.
Marepalli Ramachandra Sastry and Ayyanki Venkata Ramanayya
started training classes at Anakapalli.
Tekumalla Ramachandra rao started training classes at
Machilipatnam.

Library pilgrimages: This was another indigenous method


developed by the Association to popularize library movement.
Iyyanki Venkata Ramanaiah who conceived the idea of
library pilgrimage states the purpose as. A pilgrimage batch
consisting of about 12 library workers who in turn divided
themselves into six sections viz.
1. Advance information section
2. Bhajan section
3. Exhibition section
4. Gramophone section
5. Lectures section
6 Magic lantern section.
Mobile library services: Another significant method invented by
Andhra Desa library association to stimulate interest of the
common man in library service was to introduce mobile library
services.

Boat library services: Unique and novel method adopted for the
spread of library and Boat library publicity’
In 1918 (west godavari)-Ayyadevara kaleswara rao started boat
library services. Ayyanki Venkata Ramanayya in palakoderu,
yendagandi,kakinada villages. Paturi Naga Bhushanam is a
pioneer in conducting Boat library service. He conducted this
service for seven years in guntur district (Buckingham canal).
Spring Festivals: During the spring season, most of the villagers
and students had free time. The important activities undertaken
during these festivals were, book exhibitions, public meetings,
sports and cultural activities establishing libraries and reading
rooms, collection of books.
Grandhalaya Sarvasvam: In 1915 the Andhra Desa Library
Association started a periodical entitled ‘Grandhalaya
Sarvaswam’ in Telugu. At the beginning it was started as a
quarterly but now it is a monthly.
Conclusion
This library movement spread in villages through traditional and
modern publicity techniques. Village library became an
information centre and a pivot of social and cultural life of the
village. Establishing more number of libraries in towns and
villages, library movement became peoples movement and
contributed a lot in eradication of illiteracy and spreading worldly
wisdom among people.
