EXPERIMENT NO:2
COMPRESSION TEST ON TIMBER SPECIMEN
1, OBJECTIVE:
i. To test a timber specimen under compressive loading parallel to the grain
ii, To draw stress-strain diagram.
iii. To study the failure characteristics of the timber specimen.
iv. To determine the following properties of the timber specimen.
2. APPARATUS:
i. Compressometer ii. Steel scale iii, Slide Calliper
3. MACHINE:
i. The universal testing machine.
4. SPECIMEN:
2"-2"-8" wooden block (ASTM D143).
5. PROCEDURE:
i. Measure the size of the specimen with a s!ide callipers.
ii. Record gage length and multiplication of the compressometer.
iii, Attach compressometer with the specimen and set the specimen in proper position of the
testing machine.
iv. Adjust the compressometer dial to read zero
v. Apply load continuously at an uniform speed until failure and read the compressometer at
1000 Ibs intervals.
vi. Take off the compressormeter when breaking starts.
vii. Record the maximum load and the final length between the gage marks.
ix. Note the characteristics of the fractured surfaces and draw the extended surfaces of the
failed specimen and show the failure plane.6. REPORT OF COMPRESSION TEST FOR TIMBER SPECIMEN:

From your test results
(i) draw stress-strain diagram and
(ji) fill in the following (with appropriate unit):
Proportional limit Yield or proof stress
Ultimate strength Breaking stress,
Modulus of elasticity. Modulus of resilience.7. SAMPLE CA\ LCULATIONS
8. GRAPH:
9. DISCUSSIONSANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
Fill in the blanks or tick (¥) the correct choice as appropriate:
1. The failure took place in a plane inclined by ____ degree with the axis of the specimen.
2. The timber specimen failed due to:
(a) compression (b) bending —(c)shear
> method was used to estimate the strength (of the specimen)
identified as the onset of the inelastic action.
4, For timber specimen the compressive strength parallel to the grain would be
than that of perpendicular to the grain.
5. Modulus of elasticity is a measure of :
(a) strength (b) stiffness (c) both
