Q3 Week 2
MAR
Introduction of the lesson

“Like the Molave” was first published in book form in 1940 and subsequently
reprinted in part in various publications, including anthologies in the Philippines and in the
United States of America.

“Like the Molave” is written by Rafael Zulueta Da Costa. It isa Filipino poem about
heroes and how they inspire regular Filipinos to be great themselves and join them on the
quest to make the Philippines a more prosperous place. The poem states that many
Filipinos are achieving great things for their country, there is still much more to be done
and more residents must contribute to the efforts. In short, Like the Molave is about
inspiring the Filipino nation to improve their country and make it self-sufficient.

“Man of Earth” is written by Amador Daguio that tackles about the basis of our life
which is we are came from the bamboo which is inspired by the story of “Si Malakas at
Maganda”. It talks about a bamboo which we originated from and we inherit this plant's
function and characteristics.

The poem speaks of courage and strength. Philippines have suffered a great deal from
countries that had colonized us. They treated the Filipinos as inferiors and were cruel to
them especially the Japanese and Spaniards. Filipinos have no choice but be submissive and
accept their situation. But then in their weakness, they were able to find strength. The
bamboo plant bends when a strong wind passes by. This is not a manifestation of weakness
but rather, it proves how smart and resilient tha bamboo plant is. If it did not bend than it
will die because the wind is too strong. It tells us that we must choose our fights. Bending
does not mean surrendering.

Like The Molave

By:Rafael Zulueta da Costa

I. Not yet, Rizal, not yet. Sleep not in peace: There are a thousand
waters to be spanned; there are a thousand mountains to be
crossed; there are a thousand crosses to be borne. Our shoulders
are not strong; our sinews are grown flaccid with dependence,
smug with ease under another's wing. Rest not in peace; Not yet,
Rizal, not yet. The land has need of young blood-and, what

younger than your own, Forever spilled in the great name of
freedom, Forever oblate on the altar of the free? Not you alone,
Rizal. O souls And spirits of the martyred brave, arise! Arise and
scour the land! Shed once again your willing blood! Infuse the
vibrant red into our thin anemic veins; until we pick up your
Promethean tools and, strong, Out of the depthless matrix of your
faith in us, and on the silent cliffs of freedom, we carve for all time
your marmoreal dream! Until our people, seeing, are become like
the Molave, firm, resilient, staunch, rising on the hillside, unafraid,
Strong in its own fiber, yes, like the Molave!

II. Not yet,Rizal, not yet. The glory hour will come Out of the silent
dreaming from the seven thousand fold silence We shall emerge,
saying WE ARE FILIPINOS! and no longer be ashamed sleep not in
peace the dream is not yet fully carved hard the wood but harder
the woods yet the molave will stand yet the molave monument
will rise and god's walk on brown legs.

 Poetic Tools

Poets also use figurative language or figures of speech to express ideas and
feelings.
Figurative language is the creative language that poets use to tell stories, share
feelings and describe experiences. Poets use figures of speech by choosing words
and phrase that make the reader see ordinary things in new ways.
In this poem, we have learned three figures of speech (simile, metaphor,
personification)

KING’S COLLEGE OF MARBEL, INC. Grade 7 English

Q3 Week 2
MAR
Simileis a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing
of different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid. Similes differ
from metaphors by highlighting the similarities between two things using words such
as “like” and “as” while metaphors create an implicit comparison. Examples of
similes can be found just about anywhere from poems to song lyrics and even in
everyday conversation.
Examples:
You were as brave as a lion
She is as innocent as an angel
They fought like cats and dogs

Metaphor is a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn’t
literally true but helps explain an idea or make a comparison. A metaphor states that
one thing is another thing. It equates those two things not because they actually are
the same but for the sake of comparison or symbolism.
Examples:
Life is a roller coaster
She is an angel
Laughter is the music of the soul

Personificationis a figure of speech in which an idea or thing is given human

attributes and/or feelings or feelings or is spoken of as if it were human.
Personification is a common form of metaphor in that human characteristics are
attributed to non-human things.
Examples:
I wanted to get money, but the ATM died.
The sign on the door insulted my intelligence
I like onions but they don’t like me

Can you look for examples of these figures of speech in the poem? Try answering
the activity below.

The past perfect tense, also called the pluperfect, is a verb tense used to
talk about actions that were completed before some point in the past. The past
perfect tense is a verb tense used to express actions that occurred in thepast that
finished before another action in the past started..In this lesson, you will learn how

Firm-up

In relation to your activity, the sentences that you have written are in the Past Perfect Tense.

in the past. It can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past.

Examples:

I had never seen such a beautiful beach before I went to Kauai.

My parents moved away from Leeds. They had lived there since they got married.

In 2015 Derek started to work in Berlin. He had always planned it.

The Past Perfect Formula

The formula for the past perfect tense is had + [past participle]. It doesn’t matter if
the subject is singular or plural; the formula doesn’t change.

Examples:

He had kept his promise

The classes had begun before I reached school

Important Note!
Regular past participles in '-ed', irregular past participles of verbs vary and must be studied.
Already / Before

'Already' is used in the past perfect positive form to something that something had been
completed before another action occurred.
'Before' is used in the past perfect in a similar sense to 'already', but in all forms.

Examples:

They had already completed the work when he arrived.

She hadn't been able to eat lunch before he telephoned.

For

'For' is used to express the duration of time something had happened before something else
occurred in the past.

Examples:

Susan had worked as an assistant manager for five years before she was promoted.
They had lived in that house for ten years before he moved in with them.

By the Time

'By the time' is used to express the point in time up until which something had happened.
