Like a Molave/Man of
1 the Earth
“Like the Molave” was first published in book form in 1940 and subsequently
reprinted in part in various publications, including anthologies in the Philippines and in the
United States of America.
“Like the Molave” is written by Rafael Zulueta Da Costa. It isa Filipino poem about
heroes and how they inspire regular Filipinos to be great themselves and join them on the
quest to make the Philippines a more prosperous place. The poem states that many
Filipinos are achieving great things for their country, there is still much more to be done
and more residents must contribute to the efforts. In short, Like the Molave is about
inspiring the Filipino nation to improve their country and make it self-sufficient.
“Man of Earth” is written by Amador Daguio that tackles about the basis of our life
which is we are came from the bamboo which is inspired by the story of “Si Malakas at
Maganda”. It talks about a bamboo which we originated from and we inherit this plant's
function and characteristics.
The poem speaks of courage and strength. Philippines have suffered a great deal from
countries that had colonized us. They treated the Filipinos as inferiors and were cruel to
them especially the Japanese and Spaniards. Filipinos have no choice but be submissive and
accept their situation. But then in their weakness, they were able to find strength. The
bamboo plant bends when a strong wind passes by. This is not a manifestation of weakness
but rather, it proves how smart and resilient tha bamboo plant is. If it did not bend than it
will die because the wind is too strong. It tells us that we must choose our fights. Bending
does not mean surrendering.

Poetic Tools
Poets also use figurative language or figures of speech to express ideas and
feelings.
Figurative language is the creative language that poets use to tell stories, share
feelings and describe experiences. Poets use figures of speech by choosing words
and phrase that make the reader see ordinary things in new ways.
In this poem, we have learned three figures of speech (simile, metaphor,
personification)
Metaphor is a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn’t
literally true but helps explain an idea or make a comparison. A metaphor states that
one thing is another thing. It equates those two things not because they actually are
the same but for the sake of comparison or symbolism.
Examples:
Life is a roller coaster
She is an angel
Laughter is the music of the soul
Can you look for examples of these figures of speech in the poem? Try answering
the activity below.
Deepen Session 2

the poem in your own words used?

Verb tenses tell us how an action relates to the flow of time. There are three
main verb tenses in English: present, past, and future. The present, past, and
future tenses are divided into four aspects: the simple progressive, perfect, and
perfect progressive.
The past perfect tense, also called the pluperfect, is a verb tense used to
talk about actions that were completed before some point in the past. The past
perfect tense is a verb tense used to express actions that occurred in thepast that
finished before another action in the past started..In this lesson, you will learn how
to use the Past Perfect form of verb. Enjoy each activity!

Greetings
Good day, learners!
It’s time to learn new things and discoveries with the help of this
module. For this week, you will learn about the past perfect tense of
the verb. Verbs are action words. We encounter these
words every day. It is time to learn how to correctly use
them in a sentence.
Have an amazing experience!
Performance Standard
The learner transfers learning by: showing ways of asserting one’s identity;
comprehending informative and short narrative texts using schema and appropriate
listening and viewing strategies; expressing ideas, opinions, and feelings through various
formats; and enriching written and spoken communication using direct/reported speech,
active/passive voice, simple past and past perfect tenses and connectors correctly and
appropriately.
Essential Understanding
Past perfect tense is used to show past actions. The past perfect tense demonstrates the past
relative to timing or other past events and is often used for reporting on things that happened
or were said. It is easy to form by adding had along with the past participle of any verb.
Essential Question

speaking and writing.
Activity 1.
4. First, Sarah fed the cat. Then, she called her mother.
Sarah __________her mother after she ___________ the cat.
Firm-up
In relation to your activity, the sentences that you have written are in the Past Perfect Tense.
Past perfect tense expresses the idea that something occurred before another action
in the past. It can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past.
My parents moved away from Leeds. They had lived there since they got married.
The formula for the past perfect tense is had + [past participle]. It doesn’t matter if
the subject is singular or plural; the formula doesn’t change.
Examples:
Important Note!
Regular past participles in '-ed', irregular past participles of verbs vary and must be studied.
Already / Before
'Already' is used in the past perfect positive form to something that something had been
completed before another action occurred.
'Before' is used in the past perfect in a similar sense to 'already', but in all forms.
Examples:
For
'For' is used to express the duration of time something had happened before something else
occurred in the past.
Examples:
Susan had worked as an assistant manager for five years before she was promoted.
They had lived in that house for ten years before he moved in with them.
By the Time
'By the time' is used to express the point in time up until which something had happened.
