Chapter 8 PED15 TORRENUEVA
Ethics in Practice
This activity aims for the students to determine wrong acts or doings with the
use of school technologies.
Below are the different situations in the use of school technologies. Place
yourself in each of the situation and internalize on the action you will do to solve the
issues.
1. You as a teacher have purchased an educational software for use in your class.
Your colleague who is teaching the same subject borrows the purchased software and
later installs the software in her own computer without your knowledge. You are
aware that what she did was against the law. What will you do with this situation?
As a professional teacher, I must be calm in telling it to my co-teacher. I must
tell him/her that the act is prohibited and punishable by law. I will also tell the
possible outcomes of what he/she did. I will recommend that he/she uninstall the
software and purchased it to make his/her use is legal. Lastly, I will tell him/her that
having a clear conscience in using educational software is some sort of things that
can be taught to the students.
2. You instruct your students that whenever in the computer laboratory,
internet access will be allowed for educational purposes only. However, three of
your students accessed the internet for downloading of internet games and play
while you discuss the lesson. What will you do with these three students?
What will you suggest to the school heads to limit the access of downloading
internet games?
I will talk to them after the class, give an oral warning that if they do that
again they will faced disciplinary actions according to school rules and regulation. I
will also explain to them the negative outcomes like additional charges in internet
fee and lagging of computer units and possible threats of downloading such data like
malwares and viruses that can harm the laboratory computers. I will also
recommend to make an security features that blocks the downloads of computer
games.
3. You (as a student) are aware that one of your classmates is being
cyberbullied by some of your classmates. The victim is losing her self-confidence
and self-esteem due to the cyberbullying experiences. What will you do to help the
victim and to stop cyberbullying?
As a classmate, I will help her to boost her self-confidence by complimenting
her and suggest recreational activities. I will accompany her in those activities, if
needed to reassure her that she is not alone. I will encourage her to express her
feelings to lessen the burden inside her. In stopping the cyberbullying, I will report
it to the responsible school personnel to handle the situation carefully and make an
action about it.
4. While the class is busy doing their activity in the computer laboratory, you
were requested by your teacher to ask the computer laboratory technician to assist
in troubleshooting the computer unit. As you approached the technician, you saw
that he was watching a malicious movie. The technician then immediately stopped
the movie and told you to just stay quiet. You are aware that it is against the policy
of the school. What will you do with this situation? Will you really just keep quiet
like what the technician has told you?
As a student, I don’t have a right to confront him. Instead I will report it to my
teacher since I am aware with this policy and let my teacher to handle it. I will also
recommend to block those sites that contains malicious videos because other
students may also have access to those sites. Prevention is better than cure.
