Right Proposal

The document discusses a project exploring how memorials impact minorities and affected groups. It will host a community art exhibit for redesigns of monuments, allowing anonymous submissions and statements from artists. The goals are to understand memorial impacts and get community input on possible redesigns.

A.

Summary

I am exploring the effects that memorials can have on minorities and people affected by

the event being memorialized. I am intrigued to explore this topic because people are told about

how great and important it is to have a memory of the past. However, these events could have

unintended consequences on future generations. These affected groups could feel less

comfortable socially, which is detrimental for communities. These monuments, specifically ones

for Confederate soldiers, are presenting minorities such as the African-American population with

many challenges. The questions I am aiming to answer are:

● What effects are these monuments causing in their areas, cities, and/or neighborhoods?

● How could memorials be redesigned to where they do not have a large impact on

communities?

● How could these monuments be preserved if the monuments are removed for a new

statue or memorial?

For the project itself I am planning on facilitating a community art exhibit for redesignes

of new monuments for the area with an explanation of the monument from the artist. Artwork

can be submitted and put on exhibit anonymously if the artist decides to. The artist will also

submit an explanation of their piece to explain what their piece means to them and their

community. The statements will either be read during the virtual exhibit either by the artist

themself, or if the artist wants me to read their explanation for whatever their reason may be.

These pieces of art will convey what the people within these communities want to see happen to

these large monuments that are presenting them with challenges. At the end of the exhibit

presentation, I will ask viewers to fill out a form asking what their favorite artwork was, what
was the most meaningful to them, and if they have any ideas for monuments despite not having

submitted any artwork. My community consultant for the project will be a member from the

Virginia African American Cultural Center of Virginia Beach. I am not looking for a faculty

advisor.

C. Project-Paper Connection
Due to my future research on the effects that monuments have on communities, I am

planning on hosting a community art exhibit for possible redesignes for monuments and

completely new monuments as well. Since some communities are against having memorials,

such as ones for Confederate soldiers, might want something more friendly and welcoming to

represent their history and area. This also offers communities that are affected by these

memorials the ability to showcase what makes them proud of their history and culture. The art

exhibit will also serve as a way for people to voice their opinions in a nonverbal format.

Therefore, an art exhibit for the redesign of current monuments will show connection within the

community to the effects of monuments.

D. Academic Honesty

I understand that any academic dishonesty by me on any part of the project/paper will result in

failure of the Senior Project and forfeiture of the Legal Studies Seal on my High School diploma.
