Cross Cultural Understanding

The concept of cultural dimensions is based on the idea that there are fundamental topics
every culture has to deal with. Anthropologists and sociologists sought to define cultural
dimensions in order to make different cultures comparable.

Individualism vs. collectivism

Individualism stresses individual goals and the rights of the individual person. An
individualist is motivated by personal rewards and benefits. Individualist persons set personal
goals and objectives based on self. Individualistic workers are very comfortable working with
autonomy and not part of a team. While the opposite, the collective is a group of individuals
who work together to achieve the same goal. A collective can be a large or small group,
running for a short or long time, with a flow that is voluntary. Then collectivists readily
accept individual advantage or praise to recognize and honor the team's success.

For example, in an organization we have to show two sides of ourselves. I become us, and we
are a part of me. Individuals will be judged by others. Therefore, we will definitely show our
best as responsible individuals. Meanwhile, the collective character will emerge if every
individual has the same goal for the common interest in an organization.
