Sop Normally Opened Ball Valve Functionality Test
Sop Normally Opened Ball Valve Functionality Test

1. Description
This SOP outlines a functionality test of Sharpe Series 89 ball valves, which serves a key function in the
rocket feed system. This test confirms a ball valve’s ability to isolate a pressure-fed medium on one end
of the closed ball valve. A general design for this test consists of a pressurizer in line with a ball valve and
a reservoir that acts as an inlet for the pressurizer. The first test uses an air compressor to pressurize
atmospheric air into a controlled pressure tank and to channel that gas into a manifold that separates
the air flow to two necessary air inlets. One flow of air is used to pneumatically actuate the ball valve,
while the latter is used to build pressure inside the isolated valve system. The second test uses a hand-
operated hydrostatic test pump to create a static pressure condition inside the isolated valve system.
Instead of pressurizing air, this part will pressurize water. This device suctions water from a bucket
through a tube and pushes the fluid into the isolated valve system.
Ideally, all ball valves will properly eliminate fluid flow. However, one should expect for some leakage to
occur. In addition, one should expect a larger volume of leak in the air test than the water test due to
the incompressibility of water. With the data acquired from these tests, one can calculate the rate of
leakage at higher pressures and evaluate the functionality of each ball valve.

2. Hazards Overview
The two mediums used in this test are atmospheric air and water, and therefore this test does not
pose many chemical hazards. Nevertheless, the following potential hazards can cause harm:
Over pressurizing poses a threat of an explosion that can cause hazards like flying shrapnel of
tank, pipe, pipe fittings, or other components in the test. Preventative measures:
o Handle the air compressor carefully to minimize damage, and do not use if it looks old,
rusty, or unreliable.
o Be sure that the air vents on the air compressor are not blocked, covered, or clogged.
o Always keep an eye on the pressure gauge.
Detachment of a loose fitting during a high-pressure static water test may pose a threat of flying
objects such as valves, gauges, and fittings. Preventative measures:
o Tighten fittings with a torque wrench, to avoid over-tightening and under-tightening.
Operating air compressor with wet hands is an electrical hazard, as it can electrically shock the
operator or damage the electronics on the compressor.
4. Waste Disposal
Wastewater can be disposed of in a nearby sink, down a drain, or, ideally, outside on a lawn.
