2 Filipino Painters and Their Works
Introduction:
Visual artist create their masterpiece in different art styles. Art styles describes the way how an artwork looks. It also
determines the manner on how an artist finds his or her own unique way of expression in creating an artwork.
Here are the different painting art styles you can choose from creating your artwork.
1. Cubism is an art style in which subjects are represented as cubes or other geometric shapes, often shows from
many different angles at the same time. It was developd in the early 20 th century by Pablo Picasso.
Vicente Silva Manansala was a Filipino cubist artist painter born on January 22, 1910 in Macabebe Pampanga.He was
recognized as a National Artist in Visual Arts. He was known as the “Master of Philippine Modern Art”. His talent
revealed when he made capies of Sagrada Familia and his mother portrait from a photograph.He work as movie poster
painter. He was alsoa billboard painter, and labourer at the Ipo Dam Construction in 1990. During the Japanese
occupation in 1941, he worked as illustrator at the Cultural Office of Japanese government.
2. Realism is an art style that depicts the reality in everyday life exactly as it appears. Realist artist explor e the
actual likeness of conditions, events, people, animals, or objects in a composition.
Fabian de la Rosa was known as “Master of Genre”. He is best remembered for his painting, landscapes, portraits, and
everyday scenes of women on their daily activities. Despite his being exposed in European arts, his style never changed.
Some of his are Riverview of Sta. Ana, Los Baños, Planting Rice, and Marikina Valley.
Fernando Amorsolo is one of the most important artist in the history of Philippine painting.Born in Manila on May 30,
1882. He was the portraitist and painter of rural Philippine landscape. He was the first to be designated a National Artist.
In his lifetime, he used natural and backlighting techniques. His most known works are Dalagang Bukid, Maiden in a
Stream, and Sunday Morning Going to Town.
3. Surrealism is an art style that produces dreamlike painting with familiar and mysterious objects arranged in a
strange way.Dreams, fantasy, and the subconscious serve as the inspirations for the artists to produce artworks
with kind of art style.
Prodencio Lamarroza is a Filipino artist who is known for his hyperrealist and surrealistic landscape paintings. He is
famous for his Amburayan Queen Series , which consists of painting that depict a protective mythological spirit. Some of
his famous works are The Golden Horizons and Red Arrows. He was known as “King of His Canvass.” He is concerned
with his color choices always. He is regarded as an artist’s artist.
4. Impressionism is an art style that depicts quick movements in nature showing how light changes within a day.
The focus is more on the effects of light and color than on the details of the subject.,
Bernardo Duldulao who painted Fishermen at Manila Bay. In this painting he showed Filipinos at work with fascinating
colors of the sunset at the bay.
5. Expressionism is an art style that tries to express feelings and emotions through strong, bright, and vivid colors
rather than the likeness or reality of the subject. The subjects are often shown as distorted or exaggerated
figures.
Onib Olmedo was also known for his figurative expressionistic style in his artworks. His style of using distorted and
colourful images in his paintings-like the one used in Trio Los Encantadores- has inspired other artist to paint artworks
similar to his.
6. Abstract is an art style the represents no specific subject or has no recognizable subject. Art elements such as
shapes, colors, and lines are usually used to show the image of the subject matter
Jose Joya was known for his bstract artworks. His painting Granadean Arabesque was inspired by the beautiful
sunflowers he saw along the way while he was traveling on a train in Granada Sppain.
Other Painters:
Carlos “Botong” Francisco was the second Filipino to receive the title National Artist in Painting. He was the poet of
Angono who revived forgotten art of mural painting.
Jose Blanco was a muralist and National Artist nominee. He was the patriarch of the Blanco family and is one of the well
known artist of Angono in Rizal. Though influenced by Botong Francisco, he managed to use his own style of painting.
One of his artworks is his own version of the Last Supper. His most typical work is the Angono Town Fiesta, where a
hundred figures, including himself, were included in the giant canvas.
Victorio C. Edades is recognized for revolutionizing the art of modern painting born on December 13, 1895. He earned
for himself the title of “Father of Philippine Modern Art.” His masterpiece The Builders made him the National Artist for
Visual Arts in 1976. His painting colors were dark and samber, depicting laborers, factory workers, and the simple folks.
He used dark tones and heavy brush strokes.
Manuel D. Baldemor is a painter, sculptor, printmaker, and graphic designer. He loves to paint the scenery and lifestyle
of the towns people in Laguna and international scenes and landscapes. He is best known for his painting in various
media that use geometric form with a folk art character. His painting Karo ng Sorbetes captured a UNESCO seat for the
Philippines during the 34th general conference in Paris.
Juan Arellano a paiter and architect, designed the zoning plan of Manila City as well as the design of the Metropolitan
Theater and old Legislative Building (now the National Museum). He made a very impressive zoning plan of the tropics.
He also designed the Jones Bridge, Manila Tranvia, and the old Intramuros
