1. As a future teacher, how do you help shape values and actions of the learners in their
destiny and society, in general?
Children carry what they are taught at a young age throughout the rest of their lives. They
will use what they have learned to influence society. Everyone knows that today’s youth will
become tomorrow’s leaders, and teachers have access to educate the youth in their most
impressionable years - whether that is in teaching preschool, teaching extracurricular, sports
or traditional classes. Teachers have the ability to shape leaders of the future in the best way
for society to build positive and inspired future generations and therefore design society, both
on a local and global scale. In reality, teachers have the most important job in the world.
Those who have an impact on the children of society have the power to change lives. Not just
for those children themselves, but for the lives of all. We all know that there is no such
specific strategies, methods and approaches that we can perfectly applied in teaching, the
important is the students’ learning. As a future teacher, Instead of learning to memorize facts
and figures, students need to ‘learn how to learn’ and how to solve problems. We need to
completely reimagine education. Instead of learning to memorize facts and figures, students
need to “learn how to learn” and how to solve problems. And they should be allowed to learn
independently. Changes are needed at every level. We have to infuse things like
entrepreneurship into the curriculum because with the disruption that’s going on, many
people are going to have to create their own jobs. We may end up in a world in which people
are more likely to be autonomous contractors than to have a secure job lasting for a lifetime.
We need to completely reframe the system of education based on where the world is going,
instead of continuing to do the same thing over and over again.
2. Explain teaching as a vocation, mission and profession. How do you embrace these?
Does it make a difference if teaching simply regarded as a profession, not as a
vocation and a mission?
Vocation is strong feeling of suitability for a particular career or occupation. Unlike
any other profession, teaching requires dedication and service in order for an individual to
be considered as a real teacher. When someone practices teaching as a vocation, they
teach with dedication. Vocation is only for some who are really dedicated not just to work
but also to serve other people. Mission, it comes from the Latin word “misio” which
means “to send”. We are sent to the world to accomplish a mission. Teaching is your
mission, means it is a task entrusted to you in this world. Every teacher has its own
unique mission, purpose, or objective that they need to accomplish. We are expected to
contribute to the betterment of this world in our own unique way. So what exactly is our
mission? It is to be an effective educator or facilitator of learning, imparting knowledge
that is not just what written in books but also in life. Our mission is to touch hearts and
minds while leading children to be a better individual who have a strong desire to
contribute to the betterment of the society and serve the country. Profession, denoting as
it does long and arduous years of preparation, a striving for excellence, a dedication to the
public interest, and commitment to moral and ethical values. If you take teaching as a
profession, this means that you must be willing to go through a long period of preparation
and a continuing professional development. For us to be able to give more (service),
which means the end goal of a profession, continuing professional education is a must.
Teaching is not just a job, it is also more than a noble profession, it is vocation
and a mission. There is difference if teaching is simply regarded as a profession and not
as a vocation and a mission. When a teacher regards teaching only as a profession, he or
she will just do everything to comply. The tendency is, he or she may not do his or her
best when teaching the students. Money and promotion would be the sole basis of the
hard work. He or she could forget the heart of teaching. When a teacher regarded teaching
as a vocation and a mission, the purpose is magnified.
4. Knowledge is not a thing that can we simply deposited by the teacher into the empty
minds of the learners. What are the steps to be considered in the process of
development, building, creating of meaning and knowledge?
“Tabula Rasa”, you are a blank slate that must be written on with the chalk of
experience. Yes, indeed. Knowledge is not a thing that can we simply deposited by
the teacher into the empty minds of the learners. Knowledge construction is a process
by which students generate ideas and understandings, the focus of classroom
instruction should be on helping students to learn and experience this process.
Activities that require students to generate ideas typically include one (or more) of the
following: First, Interpretation – means drawing inferences beyond the literal
meaning. For instance, students might read a description of a historical period and
infer why people who lived then behaved as they did. Second, Analysis – means
identifying relationships among the parts of a whole. Students might investigate local
environmental factors to determine which are most likely to affect migrating birds.
Third, Synthesis – means identifying the relationships among two or more ideas.
Students might compare and contrast perspectives from multiple sources. Lastly,
Evaluation – means judging the quality, credibility, or importance of data, ideas, or
events. Students might read several accounts of an event to determine which they find
most credible.
