This document discusses different types of energy sources and renewable energy technologies. It focuses on comparing conventional windmills and wind lenses. Conventional windmills use wind turbines to convert kinetic wind energy into mechanical or electrical energy, but have issues like harming bird populations and causing sound and radar interference. Wind lenses aim to more efficiently produce electricity from wind by using diffuser structures to accelerate wind speed and concentrate wind energy locally before it reaches the turbine. Experimental analysis revealed that a diffuser shape can effectively speed up the wind entering the structure.

SLIDE 1:

Since man invented fire, he has relied on one energy source or another.
Energy plays a huge factor in our lives, providing comfort, increasing
productivity and allowing us to live the way we want too. Our lives are
literally surrounded by energy, but we do not often stop to think about
why those energy sources are important.
Fossil fuels are non-renewable, that is, they draw on finite resources that
will eventually dwindle, becoming too expensive or too environmentally
damaging to retrieve. In contrast, the many types of renewable energy
resources-such as wind and solar energy-are constantly replenished and
will never run out. Most renewable energy comes either directly or
indirectly from the sun. Sunlight, or solar energy, can be used directly
for heating and lighting homes and other buildings, for generating
electricity, and for hot water heating, solar cooling, and a variety of
commercial and industrial uses. The sun's heat also drives the winds,
whose energy, is captured with wind turbines. Every day around the
world, wind turbines are capturing the wind’s power and converting it to
electricity. When the wind blows, the turbine's blades spin clockwise,
capturing energy. This triggers the main shaft, connected to a gearbox
within the nacelle, to spin. The gearbox sends that energy to the
generator, converting it to electricity. These renewable energy
technologies are clean sources of energy that have a much lower
environmental impact than conventional energy technologies.
SLIDE 2:
CONVENTIONALWINDMILLS:
A wind turbine is a device that converts the wind's kinetic
energy into electrical power. Wind turbines are designed to exploit the
wind energy that exists at a location. Aerodynamic modeling is used to
determine the optimum tower height, control systems, number of blades
and blade shape. Conventional horizontal axis turbines can be divided
into three components: the rotor component, the generator component
and the structural support component.
WORKING OF A CONVENTIONAL WINDMILL:
Simply stated, a wind turbine works the opposite of a fan.
Instead of using electricity to make wind, like a fan, wind turbines use
wind to make electricity. The wind turns the blades, which spin a shaft,
which connects to a generator and makes electricity. Wind turbines
convert the kinetic energy in the wind into mechanical power. This
mechanical power can be used for specific tasks (such as grinding grain
or pumping water) or a generator can convert this mechanical power into
electricity.

SLIDE 3:
The major problems faced or complaints on wind turbines include the
effect on bird population, sound pollution and radar interference and
location. Wind turbines have a detrimental effect on the bird population
due to migration patterns and birds being caught and injured or even
killed by the towering high speed blade. The biggest cause of the sound
in the conventional wind turbine is the air drag at the tips of the blades.
Radar interference is consistently a problem with wind turbines which
causes different groups to be against the use of wind farms near urban
areas and also these windmills cannot be constructed on a lower surface
as they need wind speed 40km/hr in order to rotate.
The above described major problems of conventional wind mills have
lead researchers to rethink about the design of the turbine. This present
study is about the improvement of a wind power system with high
output, aims at determining to collect the wind energy effectively and
what kind of diffuser can generate energy efficiently from the wind.
SLIDE 4:
WINDLENS:
The wind lens is a modification on the wind turbine. It is an attempt to
be more efficient in production of electricity and less invasive to both
humans and nature.
Wind power is proportional to wind speed cubed. If we can increase the
wind speed with some mechanism b utilizing the fluid dynamic nature
around structure, namely if we can capture and concentrate the wind
energy locally, the output power of a wind turbine can be increased
substantially. There appears hope for utilizing the wind power in a more
efficient way. This concept of accelerating of wind is known as wind
lens technology.
SLIDE 5:
Basically, there are two hollow structures. They are diffuser and nozzle,
out of which one has to be chosen. In order to select a structure the flow
characteristics should be the criteria. Hence both the structures are
subjected to wind and analysis is carried out. It was revealed from
experiments that a diffuser-shaped structure can accelerate the wind at
entrance of body.
