Assignment 1 Experimentation, observation and site e-mail 02/02/2021 20

1. Visit a local metallic bridge in your town. Take a selfie with the bridge in the back ground. (1)
2. Take a close up of a weld or any other joining method used to make up the bridge structure.
What welding process was used to make the weld? (1) If rivetted say so!
3. Look for metallic furniture in a MacDonald’s or elsewhere, and take a picture of a fillet weld on
the chair or table. What welding process was used to make the weld you found. (1)
4. Fill a glass of water and drop few drops of cooking oil on the water surface. Observe what
happens to the floating oil drops, over the next 5 minutes. State your observation and explain
why it happens that way. Hint : Think of Energetic principles - Why does water from the lake in
the mountains naturally flows down to the sea level?(1)
5. Based on the observation in 4 above, what will happen to the grains of a ferritic stainless-steel
type AISI 405 used as an attachment of a hanger bar in a boiler, when it is exposed to flame
temperatures of the boiler for 4 years of continuous operation? It is understood that the 405
steel will not oxidize in the high temperature service environment. (1)
6. In the question 4 above, why does the oil float on top of the water? (1)
7. In the steel making process, molten steel and slag are held in a crucible for a short time for
chemical analysis. The slag is formed with complex Calcium silicates and metallic oxides. Will the
molten slag be at the bottom of the crucible? Explain your answer. (1)
8. Take a picture of a weld on a bus or a train or a car. What welding process was used to make this
weld? (1)
9. Observe the video 1 on galvanizing. The picture below is of a galvanized wire mesh that was
purchased in the beginning of the summer, but it started rusting in less than 3 months during
the summer. Normally galvanized structure should last for many years without rusting. Search
the web for the manufacturing process of making wire mesh.
a. Observe and report where the rust is forming? (1)
b. Why is the rust forming there? (1)
c. What welding process is used to manufacture the steel mesh? (1)
d. Is the manufacturing process under control? (1)
e. What do you think has gone wrong? (1)
10. Observe the video 2 on making a dining table. What welding process is the welder using? (1)
11. Observe the video 3 on making a burner for a BBQ. What welding process was the designer
using? (1)
12. Observe the video 4 on making a stainless steel coffee cup. What welding process is the welder
using to weld the cup? (1)
13. Observe video 5 – where someone with no welding experience shows how to repair a steel
fence. What is wrong with this video? Comment on :
a. Welding equipment (1)
b. Welding process (1)
c. Quality of weld (1)
d. Will you hire the person in this video to work on a bridge repair project, that you are
supervising, explain your answer ( 1)
