CE 3105 Multicomponent Distillation Tutorial
Question 1
A feed containing 75 mole % pyridine, 17 mole % -picoline and 8 mole % -picoline is fed
to a continuous distillation column operating at atmospheric pressure The distillate contains
99 mole % pyridine and 1 mole % -picoline whilst the bottom stream contains 20 mole %
pyridine, 53.67 mole % -picoline & 26.33 mole % -picoline. The feed enters the column
as liquid at its boiling point. The reflux ratio is 5 : 1.
The relative volatility of pyridine with respect to -picoline is 2.32 and -picoline to -picoline
is 1.54 – both at the mean column temperature.
a). Using the key component method and the Gilliland Correlation, calculate the number
of theoretical stages required for the separation.
b). Calculate the composition of the liquid stream leaving the bottom of the column and
entering the reboiler.
Question 2
The separation of a mixture containing 56 mole % benzene, 30 mole % toluene, 10 mole % xylene
and 4 mole% cumene is to be carried out in a plate distillation column. The distillate will contain
99.3 mole% benzene, 0.5 mole % toluene and 0.2 mole% xylene. The bottom product will contain
0.5 mole % benzene, 72.4 mole % toluene, 23.1 mole % xylene and 4 mole% cumene. The
pressure at the top of the column is 100 kN m-2 and the pressure drop across the column is 20 kN m-

. The reflux ratio is 10: 1, the feed enters as liquid at its boiling point and the condenser may be
assumed to be a total and perfect condenser.
