The detailed lesson plan teaches students to add mentally two to three one-digit numbers with sums up to 18. The 50-minute lesson begins with an introduction and drill on addition. Students then practice adding combinations of numbers using strategies like grouping and doubles. Games are used to reinforce the concepts before an oral assessment tests students' ability to quickly provide sums.

DETAILED LESSON PLAN

DLP No.: 13 Learning Area: Mathematics Grade Level: 1 Quarter: 2 Duration: 50 mins
Learning Adds mentally two to three one-digit numbers with sums up to 18 using Code:
Competency/ies: appropriate strategies M1NS-IId-28.1b
Key Concepts/ Adding mentally is adding without using pencil or pen and paper.
Understandings to
be Developed
1. Objectives
Knowledge Add mentally two to three one-digit numbers with sums up to 18.
Skills Play games with concentration.
Attitudes Participate actively in group activities.
Values Active participation in group contest.
2. Content / Topic Adding Mentally Two To Three One-Digit Numbers With Sums Up To 18 Using Appropriate
Strategies
3. Learning Worktext page 20-A
Resources / Number cards , flashcards, roulette
Materials /
Equipment
4. Procedures (indicate the steps you will undertake to teach to teach the lesson and indicate the no. of minutes
each step will consume)
Preparation 1. Drill addition with sums up to 18
5 minutes Spin the roulette and give the sum

2. Change the grouping of addends and find the sum of addition sentences on the board
( 3 + 1 ) + 4 = ____ 5 + ( 2 + 2 ) = ____

3. Sing the addition song

One and one, two,
Two and two, four,
Three and three, are six for me,
Four and four, eight,
Five and five, ten,
Little fingers in my hand.
Today we will learn more on addition without using paper and pencil.

Presentation 1. Presenting the task

20 minutes Ben, Ken and Len are friends. They collect stickers. Ben has 7 stickers.
Ken gives Ben 3 stickers and Len gives him 8 stickers more. How many stickers does Ben
have in all? ( Teacher will ask questions about the story problem)

2. Solving the problem

Solution 1:
We use counters to represent the number of stickers
||||||| and ||| and |||||||| is ||||||||||||||||||

Solution 2:
We want to add 7, 3, and 8. Add 7 and 3 first. The sum is 10.
Then add 10 and 8. The sum is 18. So 7 + 3 + 8 = 18 stickers in all.

Solution 3:
7 10
3
+ 8 ----- 8
18 stickers in all
Focus on each of the following concepts:
a. To add 2 to 3 one-digit numbers mentally, use mental techniques like
adding doubles, near doubles, grouping property and expanded form.
b. To add 3 one-digit numbers look for 2 addends whose sum is 10 then
add this sum to the remaining addend. If there are no addends whose
sum is 10, get the sum of any 2 addends. Then add this sum to the
remaining addend.
c. Adding mentally is adding without using pencil or pen and paper.

3. Did we use paper and pencil in adding the numbers? (No)

Can you add without writing your computation on paper? How? (Yes, mentally)

Practice Let the pupils play the “Concentration Game” – Group game and contest
10 minutes Let the members of each group take turns in giving the answers. Let the
pupils clap their hands and snap their fingers of their left hand followed by the
right hand as the teacher points to the addition sentences with two 1-digit
number with sums up to 18 on the board.
Examples:
Written on the board 4 + 9 = _____
Clap while saying 4, snap while saying plus (+), snap
while saying 9 then clap while saying equals(=) then pupil will
tell the answer.
The pupils should give the answer snappily without breaking the continuous
pattern. The group that does not commit any mistake wins the game.

2) 5 + 8 = _____
3) 7 + 6 = _____
4) 8 + 4 = _____
5) 9 + 6 = _____

5. Assessment (indicate whatever it is thru Observation and/or Talking/Conferencing to Learners and/or

Analysis of Learners’ Products and/or Tests)
Oral Test Give the following activity:
10 minutes Call 4 pupils in front of the class. Give each child one number card. Tell the
rest of the class to check if the sum that is given is correct.
The first child will tell his/her number.
The second child will tell the word “plus” then his/her number.
Then, the third child will tell the word “plus” then his/her number.
Finally, the fourth child will tell the sum of the 3 numbers.
The class checks if the sum is correct.
You may repeat the activity until several groups have been called to
participate.
6. Assignment (indicate whether it is for Reinforcement and/or Enrichment and/or Enhancement of the day’s
lesson and/or Preparation for new lesson)
Enhancing the day’s
lesson Answer your Worktext on page 20-A.
3 minutes
7. Wrap-up / Remember:
Concluding Activity = To add 2 to 3 one-digit numbers mentally, use mental techniques like
2 minutes adding doubles, near doubles, grouping property and expanded form.

=To add 3 one-digit numbers look for 2 addends whose sum is 10 then
add this sum to the remaining addend. If there are no addends whose
sum is 10, get the sum of any 2 addends. Then add this sum to the
remaining addend
