Unit 5 Text Questions Forestry

The document contains review questions about the timber industry. It discusses how the industry has a harder time adjusting to sudden demand changes than other industries because it takes time for trees to grow. It also discusses how Canadian policy changes impacted American timber companies and how geographical information systems and biotechnology benefit forestry management and tree hardiness.

Review Questions

1.
a. Why is it harder for the timber industry to adjust to sudden demand in the market
than some other industries?
b. In the timber industry, they need to wait for trees to grow before they can sell
woods. If there’s suddenly a high demand, they don’t have enough time to get
enough wood.
2.
a. How did a change in Canadian forestry policy impact the American timber
industry?
b. Companies producing goods that use lumber started sourcing from more Canadian
forests, so there was a lower demand from the American timber industry.
3.
a. Why are oak barrels used when making wine?
b. Oak contains tannin, which naturally protects it against disease and pests. When
wine is stored in oak barrels, the tannin combines with the wine and influences
the flavor.
4.
a. How do geographical information systems benefit those in forestry?
b. Geographical information systems make it easier to manage forests. They make it
more efficient to collect and analyze data. They’re also useful when combined
with aerial photography if trees aren’t in easily accessible areas.
5.
a. Describe two examples of how biotechnology is applied to forestry.
b. Biotechnology can be used in forestry to strengthen plants’ abilities to fight off
diseases, pests, and other potential issues. Another way it can be used in forestry
is through phytoremediation, which is when plants are used to decontaminate a
natural element.

Critical Thinking Questions

1.
a. This unit discusses the ways international competition has challenged the
American lumber market. What kind of changes in the global market could
benefit the American industry?
b. If more companies sourced from American lumber, the industry would benefit.
This is only true to a certain point, however, because if the demand is too large,
they won’t be able to provide enough lumber.
2.
a. If you had to choose a type of wood for a rocking chair for a front porch, what
kind of wood would you choose and why?
b. I would choose oak. It’s strong enough to bear the weight of someone sitting in it.
Also, the rocking chair will be outside, and oak has natural defenses against
diseases and pests.
3.
a. How did the development of engines help the timber industry?
b. The development of engines made the timber industry much more efficient.
Lumber could easily be moved and, with the help of chainsaws, trees can more
easily be cut down.
4.
a. The unit discusses harvesting trees that are submerged in water. How do you think
their being in water will change how the timber can be used?
b. I think timber that’s been fully submerged in water should probably be used for
indoor, delicate use, because it’s probably weaker than wood that hasn’t been
submerged in water.
5.
a. Why is it important that those developing forestry equipment understand forestry
as well as mechanics?
b. They need to understand how machines work and what will work best for a
particular part of forestry in order to make the best tools.
