DESCRIPTION
The Basic Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Course for Media
Personnel is a training designed to inform and educate media reporters, writers and
news editors on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in the Philippine context.
The activity will be held on 17-20 January 2017, organized by the Public Affairs
Office (PAO) and will be participated in by invited media personnel.
RATIONALE
Republic Act 10121, also known as the Philippine Risk Reduction and Management
Act of 2010, directs the Office of Civil Defense to provide leadership in the
development of strategic and systematic approaches to reduce vulnerabilities and
risks to hazards.
To achieve this, OCD must harness the power and reach of the mass media, which
is the most influential source of information for Filipinos. OCD must work with mass
media in ensuring wider dissemination of information not only in the critical stage of
early warning on hazards and impending disasters, but also in other stages of
disaster management. The media must also be tapped in order to achieve positive
perceptions and attitudes to advance the national government’s DRRM and OCD’s
institutional goals.
PURPOSE
The Basic Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Course for Media
Personnel aims to orient mass media personnel covering OCD and NDRRMC on
the fundamentals of DRRM. This is to ensure that the media personnel understand
the hazards and disaster risks that threaten Filipino communities, and the
government system for reducing risks and managing disasters.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Understand the basic concepts of DRRM, the Philippine DRRM System, and
National DRRM Framework and Plan.
Understand the various tools, activities, programs and protocols used by the
