A Significant and Memorable Leadership Experience

This week I was able to lead the high school professional learning community (PLC)

which focused on the importance of being a culturally sensitive practitioner. This experience

connects with ELCC Standard 4: Collaboration as an Essential for Leadership Development. In

speaking with teachers through the years, I noticed that they had a narrow definition of what it

means to be culturally sensitive. Culture refers to a set of norms, beliefs, and traditions that shape

a person or groups of people. I have learned and am now helping teachers fully understand what

culture is and how it relates to student outcomes. I am truly grateful to have had this leadership

experience and for having the opportunity to be a teacher leader.

Administrators are not only school leaders, but they are also instructional leaders.

Therefore, it is beneficial for me to have had experience in facilitating professional development.

Moreover, I was able to help teachers shift their perspective regarding cultural sensitivity, which

will support the way they approach lessons and differentiate instruction. Cultural sensitivity has a

direct impact on how teachers approach instruction and are what drives instruction. Therefore, I

am certain this topic will be a consistent trend in education and one that I will have to support

my staff in developing.

Next Week’s Leadership Focus

Next week’s focus will be on ELCC Standard One: Vision as an Essential of Leadership

Development. The School Improvement Team (SIT), of which I am a part, will meet to discuss

the efficacy and fidelity of goals and review relevant data. I will use this internship activity to

gain experience stewardship of the school’s vision and goals.
