Course (Catalog) Description

Basic concepts and principles of mechanics: vector algebra; equilibrium of particles in two
and three dimensions; definition of moment and couple; reduction of systems of forces;
equilibrium of rigid bodies; statically determinate structures including beams, trusses,
frames, and machines; internal forces; shear and bending moment diagrams in beams;
friction and its applications, centroid and center of gravity of lines areas, and volumes;
moment of inertia and radius of gyration.

Course Prerequisite: PHYS 101 or PHYS 131

Grade Distribution:
Assignment (5%), Quizzes (15%), and Attendance (5%) = 25%
Mid-term Exam (Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 and Sections 5.1 & 5.2) = 30%
Final Exam (Chapters 5 to 10) = 45%
Total = 100%

Notes:

Quizzes
 There will be a maximum of TEN (10) quizzes throughout the semester. The
schedule of quizzes will be sent to you. The lowest two marks will be excluded
from the total of the quizzes part.
 The quizzes will be held on Wednesdays at 8:30 pm (Please keep this time for
the quizzes).

Examinations
 The mid-term and final exams are coordinated and graded for all sections
commonly
 No make-up exams shall be allowed; conflicts with other multi-section courses
are to be resolved by each student individually

Assignments
 Assignments will be assigned and must be submitted according to the attached
table
 Each assignment must be submitted according to the Standard Format
 Each assignment must have a cover page

Attendance
 The university regulations regarding attendance are strictly adhered to
 More than Nine (9) unexcused absences will directly result in (DN) grade.
Each absence will result in deduction of 1 mark with 3 absences without penalty.
