C1 Assignment1 Due by 01feb2021

This document contains instructions for Assignment 1 of an analytical methods course. It includes 3 problems: 1) using a spreadsheet to calculate moments and reactions for continuous beams and drawing shear and moment diagrams; 2) determining bending moment and deflection in a grade beam under two loads; and 3) calculating radial displacement and bending stress in a penstock wall under internal water pressure, and analyzing bending stresses in a ring girder supporting the penstock.

1. Develop a spreadsheet to calculate the moments and reactions at the supports of continuous,
multi-span beams by the moment distribution method. For each of the two structures illustrated
below:

(a) Use your spreadsheet to calculate the moments and reactions at the supports.

(b) Draw the complete shear and moment diagrams. Label the diagrams with the values for the
peak shears and peak mid-span moments along with their locations.

NOTE: Assume that E is constant in each case.

Case I: Case II:

2. A reinforced concrete grade beam—shown below—carries two concentrated loads of 1000 kN each.
As an approximation, the soil is assumed to behave as a Winkler foundation. The grade beam is
1000 mm wide by 1500 mm deep and is 50 m long. The foundation modulus of the soil is
150 kPa/mm. (Note the units!) The elastic modulus of the concrete may be assumed to be
E = 20,000 MPa.

(a) Determine the bending moment in the grade beam directly under each 1000 kN load.

(b) Determine the deflection of the grade beam directly under each load. (Neglect the weight of
the grade beam for this calculation.)

3. A long steel penstock has a diameter of 48" and a wall thickness of 1/2". It is supported on ring
girders at 40'-0" on centre. At the location under consideration, the water inside the penstock is
under 600 feet of static head—or 600'  62.4 pcf = 37,440 psf = 260 psi of pressure.

(a) What is the outward radial displacement of the penstock wall at a large distance away from
the ring girders?

(b) Assuming the ring girders are perfectly rigid, what is the maximum bending stress in the
penstock wall due to the internal pressure of the water?

(c) A cross-section through the ring girder is shown below. You have been asked to quickly
check the bending stresses in the ring girder due to various load conditions. Draw and
dimension the section you would use for analysis (i.e., determine the effective breadths of the
curved “flanges” at the tank wall and outer flange) and calculate the following section
properties:
 cross-sectional area A
 location of the centroidal axis
 moment of inertia, I, about the strong axis
