ACTIVITY 2: Let’s Ponder:

My Concept of Freedom is
What is Freedom 1. Is the ability to act a certain things
without any restrictions or
hindrance

2. Freedom is having a free will in

accordance with morality and
spirituality

3. Freedom is the right is the right to

act, to speak, to talk, to socialize in
the society he/she live in without
any restraints

4. Freedom is a moral law which

means a person act acts in accord
to moral law, has a mindset that
he/she is free, and the ability to act
in accordance with reason and not
by desire.

5. Freedom is being in a state of self-

governance. It is the absence of
control of others. In other words,
freedom is in a state of autonomy.
A man can act freely without being
control by others however a control
may exist to himself. This control is
what we call moral and ethics and it
ask question like “ is it moral to act
like this? or do my actions is
ethical? It is a guide of man to
become free without putting an end
to the freedom of others.
Guide Questions:

• What do you think makes us free?

Being free is a state where actions and choices has no restriction or controlled by
others. When we able to do and to decide what we want then it makes us free.
Therefore, we are able to act based on our free will and self-determination. Every
human can act freely in this society. He/she can’t wear what clothes he/she want, can’t
enroll the course he/she want, can eat what he/she want, etc. Those action in the
society that we are able to do is what makes us free. We are also because we are able
to think, to choose, or to decide based from our selves without any external factors,
manipulating, or controlling them. For example, I’m answering my module right now. No
one said me not to answer my module and no one is controlling my time in answering
my module. In other words, what makes us free is the absence of control, manipulation
or influence. It’s the absence of coercive power, legitimate power, or any kinds of power
that makes an individual to control is freedom especially his/her free will. Because we
are humans being free is a part of our nature. If other beings or individuals put
restriction to ourselves the only things we must do is to seek for our freedom because
we are free in nature. Therefore, ,what makes us free is because we have free will,
voluntarism, and the ability to act o to perform that is in accordance to our mid and not
by the command of others

• How do we know that we are free?

We know that we are free when no one was able to interfere our decision,
choices and action. In other words, we are free when no one controls or manipulating
our freewill and physical action. Being free is a part of human nature, therefore
everyday it is part of our daily to act and to choose freely. No man has the right to
impose restriction and to take away our freedom because we humans has an equal
freedom in this world. When someone dehumanize us then we are in a state where our
freedom is taken away. We are free in an extent that all our choices such as going to
school, praying, playing at the park, and other activities are not being restricted by other
individuals. We are free when we able to decide which is right and wrong without any
manipulations of others. We are free when want to do moral actions without being
control b other individuals. We know we are free if our free will and actions in this
society or world rather or not impeded by other beings or individuals

• How do you use your freedom responsibly?

Just like the comic book of spider man “with great power comes with great responsibility”
freedom is considered a s a power to be what we want to be. However, with this kind of
power we must know that we must not also take away the freedom of others even from
ourselves. In our society there is a law that put restriction to human beings. Those
restriction serves as regulation to our freedom so that other can still maintain their
freedom without taking away the freedom of other individuals. We all know that freedom
is to act freely but I believe these action and choices must be moral, logical, and with
reason. We must think first for the possible consequence or it may lead to the abuse of
freedom. For example, I’m free in this word but is it ethical or mora to steal to others
because I am free? Or Can I laugh the other poor individuals because I’m free to do so?
My freedom is all in accordance with the law of man and God. Therefore, I was able to
use my freedom responsibly because I know that there is more negative consequence if
I will abuse my freedom. I was able to use my freedom responsibly by respecting the
freedom of others, following of man and God, and able to perform such action, choices,
and decision in accordance with reason, logic, morality.

What’s More?

ACTIVITY 3: Know the Consequences (30 pts)

Let us try to find out the possible outcome of each choice or reaction. Below is a table
where in column A the three (3) reactions are written. On column B, write the possible
outcome or result for each reaction/choice made Answer also the guide questions

REACTION / CHOICE OUTCOME / RESULT

1. You may choose not to help Samuel I believe that ignoring is an act of
and just watch or ignore him while he neutrality. I might not help Daniel because
picks up his books he can do it by himself or I cannot help
Daniel because I’m shy. This actions can
result to a habitual behavior of ignoring.
Meaning If I keep ignoring people it will
become part of daily actions which is an
unethical thing to do. In the case of Daniel,
he might have difficulties picking up his
books or he might feel loneliness or
isolation. He might feel also nothing about
the situation because I’m neutral, I didn’t
help or react about the situation.
Therefore, ignoring someone can will
affect my behavior and it can affect Daniel
in a way that he will face difficulty picking
the books, he might feel loneliness’, or he
might feel nothing. But I also believe this is
what we call self-independence. Meaning
Daniel can do it by himself without the
needs of others. This will make Daniel
independent at all times without the help of
others.

2. You may choose to help him pick up Helping Daniel is a good thing to do
his books morally. Daniel will not face difficulties
and picking the books will become much
easier. It’s not also about helping Daniel
to pick up the books but it will be a good
opportunity to make friends with Daniel.
In the case of Daniel, it will improve his
mood, self-esteem, and provide
happiness to himself. Daniel will also feel
gratitude.

3. You may laugh at him and refuse to Laughing at Daniel is not a moral thing to
help do. First of all it will make Daniel frustrated
to himself. Second it will result to
annoyance to him that will lead
difficultness in picking up the books.
Daniel might feel anger to himself and to
me. It is possible also that Daniel might
attack me verbally or physically for
laughing him. In other words, it might affect
the emotions of Daniel negatively which
can result difficultness in picking up the
books or a fight. It might also result anxiety
to Daniel if I will do such action.

Guide questions:

1. Which do you think is the best choice you will undertake among the three?

The best choice I made that I will undertake among the three is the second choice
which is helping Daniel in picking up the books. My choice is based on my moral
thinking meaning I chose that action because it is good and it defines to be good.
Therefore, it is my will to help Daniel because I know Daniel needs assistance even if
he will not ask so.
2. Why do you choose to undertake that actions?

I chose to help Daniel because I know that is it the moral thing to do. A moral
action is an act that intents to do good. It is the nature of humans to help however
some only has the ability to act morally. In my case I want to improve my ability to do
such moral act and it can only be done by doing good things and helping one another.
It will help also Daniel it terms of picking books in a way that it will not take too much
time and to make it much easier. Daniel will feel positive emotions too such as
happiness, gratitude, and joy. Helping one another is an act of kindness therefore
helping one another will bring good not just me but also to Daniel. It might also a good
opportunity to make friends with Daniel so that I can extend my connection. In other
words, this action will also improve my socialization skills. Philosophically speaking, I
also believe in the concept of altruism. Altruism is the principle and moral practice of
concern for happiness of other human beings or animals resulting in quality of life both
material and spiritual. In order to achieve and apply this moral philosophy of life it is
my duty to do good and help others for the sake of happiness to myself and to other
individuals.

3. Based on your answer in number 1, how can you describe the meaning of
freedom?
Now let us recall that freedom is a free will and an act of self-governance.
Meaning a free man can independently without the control of others. So based
from the situation Daniel was to act without any restriction to others. I cannot say
to Daniel that must not pick the books because I said so, it is a violation to his
freedom. Another thing that I notice is that the situation said that I may choose to
help Samuel or to ignore him. Let’s recall that freedom is also the ability to decide
or to create myself. Therefore, it is my freedom also to decide whether I decide to
help Daniel or not. Daniel can’t just say I must help him because he said so. It’s
my decision or my will to do such action. However, because choose to ignore him
or not to help him I cannot guarantee that it will result to a positive outcome.
Therefore, based on my answer in number 1 freedom is act of individual or
the ability of an individual to decide or choose without any restriction or hindrance
of other individual. In other words, a free man has a self-independence to do what
he/she will do. So freedom has free will which is the ability to choose between
different action without any restraints.

ACTIVITY 4 : Exercising Prudence ( 30 pts) SITUATION

One Monday morning, Angela was rushing towards her work so she won’t
be late since she was already given last warning by her supervisor the previous
week that if would incur another late for work, she would be suspended for 7 days
without pay. Along the way, she saw a very old woman who was about to cross
the highway, a situation which is really very dangerous for her age. Angela is faced
with a dilemma whether to assist the old woman to safely cross the street or not
and continue rushing so she won’t be late for work.

Questions:
1. If you are Angela, what choice will you make? Why? Expound your
answer (5 pts)

The situation shows a dilemma which can make Angela either get the negative
consequence if he/she choose a choice. But if I’m Angela I was choose to act on
what is moral thing to do. It simply answers the question like what is important the
life of the old lady or the 7-day payment. We must know that a life cannot be
replace with money. Even though it’s my responsibility to go early for my work I will
not select my raise over the life of the old lady. Therefore, I will choose to help the
young lady. The freedom I possess in this possession is the moral freedom. I will
help the old lady because it upholds human dignity and goodness. Therefore, I can
guarantee that the life of the old lady will be safe. It is my fault also that I will be
suspended because it’s my choice to be late at work. Therefore, I’m willing to
accept the negative consequence to myself in order to help the old lady not put her
life at risk.

2. What do you think is the consequence of making such choice? (5 pts)

Based from the situation there are positive and negative consequence. The
positive consequence from making such choice is that Angela can guarantee that
the life of the old lady will not be at risk. In other words, the life of the old lady will
be safe. It is also an act of morality therefore it will bring happiness and sense of
well-being not just from Angel but also to the old lady. However, the negative
consequence from such choice is that Angela will be suspended from her work
without pay. It can also affect the reputation of Angela which can make her a bad
impression to the company. But these negative consequence is nothing to the
positive consequence because we know that life is irreplaceable by money nor
promotions.

3. Do you consider such choice a product of your freedom? In what sense?

(5 pts)

All choice is a product of freedom if and only if that choice is not been influence
or controlled by others. Therefore, freedom is not a product of coercive force,
legitimate force, or power of reward. In other words, a choice that is in accordance
with freedom does not came from the physical and verbal punishment by the
organization or individual, does not came from the position or title of an
organization or individual, and does not came from the reward imposed by an
organization or others. I cannot consider going to work early as because there is
a punishment as a freedom because we are putting restriction to the individual’s
action to the company. But I know those restrictions are regulations for the
company. Choosing to save the old lady is what I call freedom for myself because
I was able to choose my actions without any control of others. I believe that if I
chose to go for work as early and not to help the old lady will be a violation to my
freedom of choice because it was influence by external parties. Helping the old
lady is what I consider freedom because I was able to help the lady based on moral
dignity and goodness. Therefore, in my mind or consciousness while creating my
decision it does not based on external factors such as the order of the supervisor
and the negative consequence that the advisor will impose because I know it is the
restriction of my freedom. Therefore, I chose to help the lady because I think that
it is the right and good thing to do. Having this will in accordance to ourselves and
not by other factors is what I call freedom.

4. Apply all 3 types of freedom in this situation: (Explain each type of freedom
based on the situation of Angela)

a. Physical Freedom: (5 pts)

Based on the situation the Physical Freedom we can observed is that Angela
is going to her work. Physical freedom is the freedom of action, to move, to do
things, to work, and to act in the physical world. In other words, physical freedom
is in act without any physical restraints. Based on the situation there are no
physical factors that hinders Angela to go to work. Therefore, Angela is free to go
anywhere especially in going to her work. Therefore, going to work freely shows
Physical Freedom

b. Psychological Freedom (5 pts)

The psychological freedom we can see in the situation is the freedom whether to
choose to help the old lady or the rush for work. Angela has a right and freedom to choose
between two choices that she thinks that is good or wise. Therefore, when Angela choose
to rush for work it does not mean her boss controls her but it means that her decision is
what she think is right for herself. And if Angela choose to help the old lady it does not
mean that old lady is ordering to help her but the decision of Angela dictates that it is the
moral and good thing to do. Therefore, there is no influence or external factors affecting
the choice of Angela because either of the decision might good and wise for Angela. If
the boss will tell Angela not help the old lady, then it is not a psychological freedom and
if the old lady commands the Angela to help her cross the street even though she is a
rush then it is not a psychological freedom. The only way it will be consider a
psychological freedom is that Angela must choose to an action base on her free will
without any command or control of others. Therefore, when Angela was in a dilemma
either to help the old lay or rush for her work we can observed that there is a psychological
freedom because there are no factors affecting the decision of Angela and either two of
the choices are good for her.

c.Moral Freedom (5 pts)

Moral freedom is the freedom that upholds human dignity and goodness. In other
words, it is an act without any restriction but in accordance to morality. The hard part in
this freedom is first we need to balance and ask if it our decisions or actions is moral or
immoral. In the situation of Angela, choosing to help the old lady without any influence or
external factors even though she will be suspended is what I consider a Moral Freedom.
Basically, moral freedom is to a moral action that is not been restrained by others. If
Angela will able to help the old lady without any individual interfering or manipulating her
decision or manipulating then we can consider it is a moral freedom. In other words, Moral
freedom is accordance also with reason and not by desire. It choice or action base on
Angela’s reason and by the desire of others. Therefore, moral freedom is when Angela
choose to help the old lady to cross the streets even though she will be late for work and
suspended for 7 days.

ACTIVITY 5: “ Be Responsible” (30 pts) Going back to the situation of Angela as stated
above, she may exercise her freedom as stated below:

1. Angela chose to help the old woman safely cross the highway but she arrived late in
her work resulting in her 7 days suspension without pay. For helping the old woman, a lot
of people praised her for what she did and she became an inspiration to others.

2. Angela chose not to help the old woman because she was rushing to work to avoid
being late for work which she did and would not be suspended and still continue to receive
her salary but she heard a news that the old woman got accidentally hit by a car and died
on the spot. With this, she felt guilty and blame herself for not helping the old woman.
a. Using the matrix below fill in the voluntariness and responsibility based on the actions
made by Angela in the above situation (20 pts)

Voluntariness Responsibility

1. Angela chose to help the old 1. She arrived late in her work resulting in
woman safely cross the highway her 7 days suspension without pay

2.For helping the old woman, a lot of

people praised her for what she did and
she became an inspiration to others.

2. Angela chose not to help the old 1. She continue her work and receive
woman because she was rushing to salary
work to avoid being late for work 2. The old woman got accidentally hit
by a car and died on the spot.

b. In which situation do you think Angela becomes more free and less free?
Justify your answer. (5 pts)
The first situation shows that Angela is more free than the second situation.
Even though she got suspended for work we can say that Angela is more free in
this situation because her freedom is in accordance with morality. Meaning she
was able to think a decision that she thinks what is good even though she might
receive negative consequence. In the good side she does not only help the life of
the old lady she also praised and appreciated by others. Therefore, even though
she might face responsibilities or negative consequence, she might also feel more
good consequence for that voluntary work. She can also try her best for the
company to gain impression from the company. Angela becomes less free in the
second situation because even though she was not suspended she is responsible
for the death of old lady by not helping her. Meaning with the guilt and blame for
herself and control one’s emotion and mentality might arise resulting Angela to be
less free. In other words, even though Angela was not suspended but she might
face more negative consequence and accountabilities for the death of the old lady
that will lead some restriction to herself such as not going outside because of guilt,
suffers from anxiety, and lack of control of emotions because of emotional
breakdown.

c. Based on the above choices made by Angel, how can you apply this
statement : “Some things are given up while others are obtained in making
choices”? (5 pts)

Some things are given up while others are obtained in making choices means that
there are things that we might receive without any actions or choices made and there are
actions that can only be achieve through actions and choices made. In the situation of
Angela all positive and negative consequence or things receive by Angela are all based
from her actions and choices made. For example, because of helping the old lady she
was able to prevent old lady’s life at risk that leads to appreciation by others, and become
inspiration of others. However, she got suspended and didn’t get any raise for 7 days.
Therefore, we can say that all those consequences receive by Angela are based from her
choices. The same thing also works as she was not able to help the old lady. She might
receive her payment but the old will day. All of those things are based on the choices of
the individual. Therefore, some things are given up while others are obtained in making
choices just like the situation of Angela
ACTIVITY 6 : “ It’s your choice”

What I Can Do?

ACTIVITY 7: Show situations that demonstrate freedom of choice (120 pts)

Situation: Give your recommendations on how the persons involved can exercise
freedom more responsibly.

Julia's family is well-known for being wealthy and influential. However, her Family
faced hard times since the beginning of lockdown caused by COVID 19 pandemic. Her
father 's business closed and they are forced to sell most of their possessions and live to
live a much simpler life. Julia, however, wishes to maintain her image among her friends.
She has resorted to borrowing money from relatives in order to keep up with her well-off
barkada.

ESSAY : (20 pts) • If you are Julia how are you going to demonstrate your freedom of
choice in this situation? What do you think would be the consequence of such choice? (
Answer must not be lower than 150 words)

Basically, I need to think practical in this situation I don’t want to make my parents
suffer financially because of my ego and pride. In the case of Julia, I will not borrow
money to my other relatives to help my parents survive this pandemic. It’s my freedom of
choice to help my parents in such situation therefore even if my one friend of mine tells
me to borrow money to my relatives to maintain my reputation has no right to dictate me
because all of my choices are based on reason and practicality. Therefore, in order to
achieve this freedom of choice I must first determine the consequence and responsibility
for my action. I must ask first what will happen to my reputation if I borrow money? what
possible actions I can do to explain this situation? And lastly can my friends understand
my situation. Based on those question I can decide a good, wiser, and practical to my
choices. Therefore, if I choose such situation I can easily managed the possible negative
or positive consequence because they were already plan. We all know that choices
without interference of others or restraints by other factors is a freedom but I also believe
that choosing without planning will lead to us of being less free because of the more
negative consequence we didn’t expect. If I’m Julia the possible the negative
consequence, I will get is that my reputation to my friends will become lower leading to
embarrassment and loss of friendship. But in a good side the possible positive
consequence in this choice or action is that I will able to help my parents financially and
we will survive this Covid-19 amid pandemic. However, if I choose to borrow my money
to relatives the negative consequence will be we will suffer financial problems such as
debt from our relatives, hunger, and we will not survive form this pandemic. But in the
good side I will have a good image and reputation to my friends. But in my state, I believe
that freedom must in accordance with morality. Therefore, even though we are free we
must think first if our actions uphold human dignity and goodness. This type of freedom
is what we call the moral freedom, it is an act or free will but with a guidance of morality.
Therefore, If I’m in the position of Julia all of my actions and choices must be practical,
moral, and with reason. So I will choose to help my friends even though the negative
consequence is that it will ruin my reputation and my image to my friends. What I can do
to for this responsibility is I will try to explain to them about our situation and if they will
not understand then simple I will just let them what them be because it’s their freedom
also whether to accept my situation or to disregard my situation. But with this choice I can
able to help my parents financially and survive this covid-19 pandemic. With my choice
and my freedom to act this choice we can start a new life over again after the pandemic
ends.

For all of these years all I want is to act freely

Where all my action and decision are based from my own mentality

Where other beings don’t owe my free will and my responsibility
