represents the corresponding induced emf in the coil? Answer: D

2. Which of the following would increase the output of a simple DC generator?

B. Reducing the number of windings in the coil
C. Using slip ring instead of split ring commutator
D. Wrapping the windings around a laminated aluminum core

3. A type of car speedometer consists of a rotating bar

magnet which produces eddy currents in a copper
disc. A model of this is shown. As the magnet
begins to rotate in which direction does the disc
move?

A. Towards the magnet

B. Away from the magnet
C. Rotates in the same direction as the magnet
D. Rotates in the opposite direction to the magnet

4. At a particular moment, a positively charged particle is moving with

velocity v in a magnetic field as shown. At this moment, what is the
direction of the force on the positively charged particle?

A. To the right C. In to the page

B. To the left D. Out of the page
Use right hand rule
5. A transformer has a primary coil with 60 turns and a secondary coil with 2400 turns. If the
primary voltage to the transformer is 110 V, what is the secondary voltage?
A. 2.4x10-4 V
B. 2.4x102 V
C. 1.3x103 V
D. 4.4x103 V
Vp/Vs = Np/Ns

6. One turn of wire with dimensions shown is in a uniform magnetic field of strength 6T. A
current travel through the wire, producing a force F = 1.4 x 10 -4 N on each side of the turn
of wire as shown. The total torque on the turn of wire is

A. 1.4 x 10-5 Nm.

B. 7.0 x 10-2 Nm.
C. 7.2 x 10-2 Nm.
D. 1.8 x 10-6 Nm.
Force = BIL
1.4 x 10-4 = 6 x I x 0.12
I = 1.94 x 10-4 A

Torque = NIAB
= 1 x 1.94 x 10-4 x (60/100) x 6
= 6.984 x 10^-4 Nm

7. A single-turn coil of wire is placed in a uniform magnetic field B, so that the plane of the
coil is parallel to the field, as shown in the diagrams. The coil can move freely. An electric
current I flows around the coil in the direction shown. In which direction does the coil
begin to move as a consequence of the interaction between the external magnetic field and
the current?

A. B. C. D.

8. In a student experiment, a bar magnet is dropped through a long plastic tube of length l and
diameter d. The time taken for it to hit the floor is recorded. The experiment is repeated
using a copper tube of the same length and diameter. Which of the following statements is
correct?

Answer: D (due to the plastic being an insulator causing it to be less attractive to the
magnet)

9. The coil of an AC generator rotates at a constant rate in a magnetic field as shown. Which
of the following diagrams represents the curve of induced emf against position?
10. Which statement applies to a step up transformer?
A. Current in the secondary coil increases with the voltage
B. Current in the secondary coil increases with the number of its coils
C. The increase in the secondary voltage reflects the law of conservation of energy
D. Electrical energy is conserved
Question 11 (5 marks)
Two types of generator are shown in the diagram.

a. What is the function of the brush in a generator? 1M

b. On the axes below sketch a voltage time graph for each generator. 2M

c.Outline why AC generators are used in electrical power production. 2M

Question 12 (5 marks)
a. When the metal rod is moved upwards through the magnetic field as shown in the diagram,
an emf is induced between the two ends.

i. Which end of the rod is negative? 1M

Using the right hand rule, the velocity (thumb) points upwards, magnetic field (index
finger) points to the right, and force (middle finger) points into the page. The force
shows how current flows from the positive charge to the negative charge, indicating
that end Y is the negative side.

ii. Explain how the emf is produced in the rod. 2M

According to Faraday’s law, an emf is induced when there is change in the magnetic flux.
Change in magnetic flux is affected by the magnitude of the magnetic field, the area,
and the potential difference between the north and south poles of the magnet.

b. Explain how the principle of induction can be used to heat a conductor. 2M

Question 13 (5 marks)
A simple D C motor consists of a flat rectangular coil with n turns in a magnetic field B as
shown.

The coil has an area of 0.01 m2and carries a current of 1 A. The

motor drives a pulley of diameter 20 cm, and weights can be hung
from either side of the pulley at point X or point Y.

a. Sketch a graph to describe the variation of torque with the angle of rotation for this motor.
2M
b. In order to prevent rotation, should a weight be hung at point X or at point Y? Justify your
answer. 1M

c. The motor is just stopped by a mass of 0.2 kg. Calculate the number turns the coil of the
motor has? 2M

Question 14 (5 marks)
An electric motor consists of a square conducting coil
PQRS, which carries 0.2 A of current, and is placed in a
0.1Tmagnetic field, as shown.

a. Determine the magnitude and direction of the force

acting on side PQ in the position shown. 2M
b. Suggest two alternative modifications to the motor that would ensure that the torque is
more consistent as the coil rotates. 2M

c. Explain how one modification suggested ensures that the torque is more consistent. 1M

Question 15 (5 marks)
Two transformers are shown in the diagram below. Both have 4 primary coil windings and 11
secondary coil windings. Transformer P however has a laminated iron core, whilst transformer Q
has a solid iron core.
a. In terms of eddy currents, explain why transformer P is more efficient than transformer Q.
2M
Transformer P is more efficient than transformer Q as transformer P is laminated with
iron core which prevents the heat loss from the transformer as said in the concept of eddy
currents.

b. The electrical power supplied to the primary coil is 1.7W with a current of 85mA. If
transformer P could be 100% efficient, calculate the potential difference across and the
current induced in the secondary coil. 3M

Step 1:
P=VxI
1.7 = V x 0.085
V = 20V
Step 2:
Ns/Np = Vs/Vp
11/4 = Vs/20
Vs = 55 V

Step 3
Ip/Is = Ns/Np
0.085/Is = 11/4
Is=0.031 A
