Design of Baseplate

The document describes the design of a base plate for a column with an eccentricity ratio of less than 1/3 and greater than 1/3. For ratios less than 1/3, the design involves checking the minimum and maximum pressure below the base plate. For ratios greater than 1/3, the design uses reinforced concrete beam theory to calculate the depth of the neutral axis, lever arm, resisting moment, anchor bolt tension, and bearing pressure. The design is checked to ensure the bearing pressure is less than the allowable concrete compressive stress.

pmin
p

Maximum pressure below the base plate = p = ( V.104 ) / L.B + 6.( M.107 ) / ( B.L2 )

p= 2.46 MPa

Since p < c .....O.K.

Minimum pressure below the base plate = pmin = ( V.104 ) / L.B - 6.( M.107 ) / ( B.L2 )

pmin = 0.65 MPa

In case pmin is (-)ve, modified pressure is calculated by the formula :

pmod = 2.V. 104 / { 3.B. ( L/2 - M. 103/V ) }

pmod = ____ MPa

Maximum pressure below base plate = p' = 2.94 MPa

Distance of critical section from the edge = lcx = ( L - d - 2.t )/2 = 139 mm

Ordinate of pressure at critical section = pc = p'. ( n - lcx ) / n = 1.08 MPa

Bending moment in critical section = BM = pc. lcx2/ 2 + ( p' - pc ). lcx2/ 3

Allowable stress for plates in bending = fb = 0.75 fy = 187.5 MPa

Allowable stress in fillet weld = 110 MPa = 1.1 Mton/cm

Strength of weld betn. column & gusset = fw = 0.7 x w x 1.1 = 0.616 Mton/cm

Since there will be two welds to resist the force in gusset, length of weld required

= Fg / ( 2. fw ) = 29.98 cm

Height of gusset plate = Length of weld = 300 mm

Max. horizontal force carried by shear key ( Hs) = 1.5 H - 0.3 V = 0.987 Mton

Required area of contact between shear key and pedestal concrete :

Ac = Hs. 104 / c = 1974.00 mm2

Width of shear key = bs = B - 2 x 100 = 300 mm

Depth of shear key = ds = Ac / bs = 6 mm

Allowable shear stress in shear key = fs = 0.4 fy = 100 MPa

Thickness of shear key from shear consideration = Ths = Hs. 104 / ( fs. bs )

= 0 mm

Bending moment in the shear key = BMs = c. ds2/ 2 = 90 N-mm/mm

Thickness of shear key from moment consideration = Thm = 6. BMs / ( 1.33 fb )

= 1 mm

Depth / thickness ratio of shear key for deflection control = 2.0

Thus thickness of shear key reqd. for deflection control = ds / 2 = 3 mm

Provided size of shear key ( mm ) :

Width = 300 Depth = 50 Thkness = 25
