School Problem Essay
Discipline in our school has been a growing concern for teachers and authorities. This is because
the disciplinary problem in our school is getting worse recently. As the Head Prefect, Ishak bin Hazmed, I
would like to highlight these problems and put forward suggestions on how to deal with them.
Truancy is the most serious problem as it has been linked to serious delinquent activities. Left
unaddressed, truancy can have negative effects on students. No one knows where the truant student
went and did. To curb the problem, parents should be informed and the students involved should be
sent for counseling. Cooperation of all parties including parents, teachers, the police and the community
is required to address this problem.
Although our school has its own anti-smoking policy, many students refuse to comply with the
policy. Cigarette butts discarded in dark corners or toilets, smoke smell, some people even sell cigarettes
on campus. The school should pay attention to this issue and strictly monitor it. Teachers should pay
attention to some places where few people go.
Of late, vandalism has become rampant. Windows, doors, tables and chairs are frequently
vandalized. Even the toilets are not spared. In addition, graffiti covers almost every wall. Hence, there
should be constant monitoring of vandalism-prone areas. The school should also install closed circuit
television cameras in these areas. Position cameras so that they are out of reach and cannot be
tampered with. This will help to identify the perpetrators. Acts of vandalism should be reported to the
police and vandals should compensate for damage to property.
The school should not turn a blind eye to these problems. It should advocate early intervention
before the problems escalate. Suspension and expulsion of repeated offenders may prove to be
effective for ameliorating discipline problems.
