Assignment 6 Week 7 by Kelvin
Task 1. Read the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost and answer the following:
1. In our own lives we constantly need to make decisions about everything; The Road Not
Taken deals with that issue: for instance, for an old person, it means to regret or not
about the way taken throughout a lifetime. What does the title and the content on this
poem mean for you?
Regarding the title I think that anyone who had taken it is sure that the loss
of something good will be kept in mind by not choosing their choice, about
the content is a test since at first glance the two options are equal but the
truth is oneself makes the difference throughout our life.
2. Do you usually hesitate when you have two choices you considered are both good for
you?
Yes, because although both are good, you always have to consider which is
the best.
3. According to the speaker, he took the road less traveled and that made the difference
Why do you think the speaker say that?
Because he is at the end of his days and opts for repentance and the fear of
God that makes a big difference.
4. Check the rhyme schemed pattern by using lowercase letters (ab, cd, ef, gh, ij, etc.).
Task 2. Read the Story “The Horseman in the Sky” by Ambrose Bierce.
1. Research about the Civil War in the US, setting of the present story.
The Civil War in the United States began in 1861, after decades of
simmering tensions between northern and southern states over slavery,
states’ rights and westward expansion. The election of Abraham Lincoln in
1860 caused seven southern states to secede and form the Confederate
States of America; four more states soon joined them. The War Between the
States, as the Civil War was also known, ended in Confederate surrender in
1865. The conflict was the costliest and deadliest war ever fought on
American soil, with some 620,000 of 2.4 million soldiers killed, millions
more injured and much of the South left in ruin.
3. What condition is vital to the events of the story when Carter Druse tell his father he
will join the union?
He betrays his state by joining the union fight and later inevitably has to
kill a Confederate spy horseman who is his father.
5. Do you think the protagonist feels any remorse about what happened?
Not at all since he had some differences with his father in addition to his
blow to his head which had a severe brain trauma.
Task 3. Read the story “All the Years of her Life” by Morley Callaghan and do the following
exercises:
1. Why does Mr. Carr stop Alfred at the end of the work day?
Because young Alfred had stolen some items from the store carrying them
in his pockets.
5. What does the expression “A little good advice is the best for a boy” mean?
I think that sometimes it is not necessary to take too drastic measures towards a
child and it is better to give good advice and on time.
6. What actions and speech prove that Ms. Higgins is a great diplomat?
Alfred's mother demonstrated her education and tranquility when facing
her son's situation, making Mr. Carr think about the great difference
between her and her son and making him feel uncomfortable and in the
end everything was in good order.
7. What clues in the story tell us that Alfred is a black sheep in the family?
His abandonment of his education, taking things that did not belong to him
and the main problems that he was causing his mother emotionally to a
point of deterioration of his health.
